canonical tags just tell google which page is the real one to fix duplicate content issues they don't build authority or power like backlinks do, you can technically rank without links if the competition is low but a canonical tag isn't a replacement for them.

In my personal opinion, canonical tags help make a website technically clean but backlinks (or real traffic) are the fuel for your website to truly excel.

No, not really. A canonical tag only helps avoid duplicate content issues and tells Google which page to prefer it doesn’t pass real authority like backlinks. You can rank without backlinks in very low competition, but canonical alone won’t do SEO.

Canonical tags by themselves will not hep a page rank.they simply tell google which version of a page should be indexed.To achieve rankings,you still need strong content,proper relevance,authority signal like back links.
