I’m an IT Manager responsible for an infrastructure with around 100 office workstations that stay powered on during working hours (and often beyond).
For most of the day these machines use only a small fraction of their available CPU/GPU resources, so I’m wondering if there are practical ways to leverage this unused compute capacity.
Does anyone have experience or suggestions on how infrastructures like this could be used effectively?
 
You could run tasks like web scraping, automation, AI data processing, or CI/CD build jobs during idle hours. Some people also sell compute power or run large-scale testing environments across multiple PCs. Just make sure company policies allow it and consider electricity, security, and hardware wear before running any external workloads.

if it is allowed and won't you get into trouble at the office, the safer route is internal workloads like rendering, testing, or AI training for company projects rather than trying to monetize spare compute externally
 
If there was a profitable venture you should approach the company and get their ok first. Otherwise there's a good chance you'll get fired

What kind of specs do those computers have and are they running 24/7?
Nope, they run 10 hours/day 5 days per week. I've different about 10 pc with 64gb ram, and good gpu for CAD.
Mostly of all are 8 Gb Ram without GPU and 16 Gb Ram with low budget gpu.

If the hardware is strong enough (especially GPUs), renting compute power through platforms like Vast.ai or Render Network could also be an option. You can use the spare capacity for internal workloads like CI/CD, testing, dev environments, data processing, or training labs.
Just make sure it’s centrally managed, doesn’t impact users, and stays within IT/security policies. Avoid non-business uses like crypto mining.

the existing RDPs pricing is absolutely over-priced and not only it's expensive but also the quality is low

I rentd one that I didn't do anything on it but task manager showed 100% usage lol and that costed me like $20 or $40
not some budget friendly price, yet people still pay for it

if yours quality and pricing will be slightly better than your competitors then should be enough to attracting some sales given the above RDP seller low quality service is still alive lol
