Reddit API access in 2026

Since January 2026 it’s been much harder to get Reddit API access approved. Applications keep getting rejected without clear reasons.

The app uses official OAuth and only accesses public subreddit data.

Has the approval process changed?
What’s the correct way to apply now?

If you already had one active before the approval update then use it, if not, it will be harder for you to get approved unless you give them a good reason

Process is much strict now

And even after approval if they suspect you of not following tos, it gets suspended

From what I’ve seen, Reddit wants very clear use cases and details on how you’ll handle data. Generic applications get rejected fast. Make sure you explain exactly what your app does, how it benefits users, and confirm you’re following their terms. Even then, approvals seem slower than before.

I wrote a blog post about this. it looks like you just cant get a new api key from reddit as the old way, you need to apply from their dev platform. However reddit providers other ways around like json ecc but are way more rete limited than their api keys

The old api’s still work? I have a list of accounts with them but was scared to run them with all the bans going on.
