Just made my first call...

I'm trying to sell my dentist website, so I made my first call to a dentist. No answer, so I left a message. Wish me luck. BTW, message went along the line of this:

Hi Dr. John Doe

This is Doe Jon, and I'm a search engine specialist. The reason I'm calling you is because I own the website dentistsite..com. My website ranks on the first page of Google for 5 keywords, all of which are related to dentists in [CITY]. These keywords alone are searched roughly 1000 times per MONTH, according to Google.

Point is, these are all potential clients that you are missing out on.

I won't take too much of your time, but if you're interested or have any questions, give me a call at [PHONE NUMBER]. I live in your offices area myself, so setting up a meeting wouldn't be a problem. Once again, my number is [PHONE NUMBER].

I am leaving this message for Dentist 1, Dentist2, Dentist3 and Dentist4 as this is not right for everybody. Some people are scarred of the internet and some people don't want to get involved with it but if anyone of you want new leads/customers then this will definitely work for you. I look forward to hearing from you soon to answer any questions.

You will obviously have to be accurate with you names and leave the same message to all the dentists - worked for me in the past sometimes

Personally I do not leave messages on answer phones I think its counter productive. I would rather speak to someone who spends the money. I would also like them not to think that I have rang them before. To me answer machines are a waste of time I do 100 phones a day easily and never leave a message I did when I started out but now I do not bother

I've been tracking the uniques I got this month and I'm at about 64 so far (Google Keyword tool showed 210 searches/month exact). So I'm getting about 30% of the searches which is not bad since I have Google 7-box above my listing.

I'm trying to lease the site to a dentist so that I have a recurring monthly income coming in from the site. I was thinking of either having one dentist put their ad on my site or maybe just doing a domain forwarding so when they click on my link in the SERPs it goes to the client's site instead.

I emailed a few dentists so far, but only 1 responded. I sent him an email regarding the terms/price and have not head back yet. I'm thinking of either calling him back or calling the other dentists as well.

The only issue is trying to get pass the gatekeeper and talking to the actual dentist. Anyone have any suggestions on how to go about achieving that? Pretty much during normal business hours I wouldn't expect to be able to talk to the actual dentist when calling so how should I go about this?

Exact same boat as you. I'd call (as someone said above) early in the morning. I believe with most dental offices, the dentist comes in before the receptionist, so you might be able to catch them for a few minutes.

I wouldn't leave a message and after a quick call try and meet up with them face to face, selling the idea over the phone is easy but closing will be at a higher % in person

the chances of you getting a sale over the phone is very small, i'm not saying you can't do it....but it's slim to none.

what you can do over the phone is get an appointment to get in to see the guy....that's the best way to get the sale.

call the dentist office again. you'll get the receptionist. tell her you'd like to make an appointment to talk to the dr. regarding a business matter, when would be the best time for him?

the days before the appointment, get a sales packet together

print a sample website on nice glossy paper.
print out cool stats how dentists w/a site get XX times more patients...
generate a list of 'buzz' words that generate interest in your product. for example refer to the website as a 'lead generation method' (that's just an example....but it gets the thought in the guy's head that the website's not just a fancy online business card but is in fact a lead generation magnet that will get him more patients in the door....which results in more profit for him.
give him some thing free for signing up...(free x hits, free x leads, free module/component)
put together a professional website for what you are selling....
come up with business cards (with your professional website address on it)...

the point here is that you want to appear bigger than you are....if you're a simple web designer, you want to make it look like you're part of a bigger business....that way pple will take you seriously

arrive to the appointment 5-10 minutes early....flirt w/the front desk pple....you want to turn on the charm and charisma big time. DON'T FORGET TO SMILE!

ice breaker intro....when you walk in to talk to your prospect, look around the room...and try to find something, family pictures, trophies, diplomas on the wall to start a conversation about....something to help you build rapport. you want to start preselling your product on a high note

presell, presell, presell...if he resits keep preselling until you hit something....if he says 'no' change the conversation briefly, then start preselling from a different angle...

if you can perfect the steps above, you will make a lot of $$$$$$$$.

remember, it's very very hard to sell from a cold call.....but if you use the cold call to set up an appointment to talk to your prospect, you're chance of closing a sale increases....

the more you do this, the easier it gets.

What do we say if we the receptionist says "dentist does not have time", asks "what sort of business matter are you talking about?", or "give me your contact information and I will forward to the dentist to get back to you"? Do we disclose to the receptionist anything about what we want to talk to the dentist about if they ask?

Call and find out the office hours. Then call either 30 mins. before or 35-40 mins. after.

One of the best posts I've ever read. After reading this, I see the huge potential in this. I now realize the call I made was pretty much useless. A random guy, with no website, no business card, calling to sell a website; the last thing the dentist/receptionist will do is take you seriously.

Now, I'm in no rush to sell the site, so I'm going to work on getting it to rank even higher, and in the mean time, create a professional site offering my SEO services. I'll then create some business cards. From that point, I'll pretty much follow what you said, except with some twists.

if the receptionist asks what it is about, just keep saying you'd like to talk to him about a business matter....don't tell her what exactly it's about. if she insists say, 'i'd like to talk to him about increasing his clientelle' or something like that.

the receptionists 'own' the front desk area....they are over worked and under paid...but man oh man, they are dedicated to their work. the key with them is to treat them like they're top dog...

if they insist on a message then #1, get their name....#2, give them your number and give them a general message (like the one above)...

call back within 48 hours if the guy hasn't called you back...ask for the receptionist you talked to already...if you get a different person say something like, 'i was talking with 'linda' the other day about getting in to see 'dr. so and so' about a business matter can you help me?

if it's the same person you talked with...say, he 'linda' i talked with you the other day about getting in to see dr. so and so, is there a good time for me to come by and talk to him for a few minutes?'

keep calling till you get an appointment

telesales is really really hard...your best bet is to use the phone to set up appointments...

sales is a 'learn on the job' job....there is no book out there that can tell you how to do it. the more you do it, the better you get at it.

Why didn't you go to his damn office and drop his receptionist a letter complete with graphics detailing the traffic of the site and all info pertaining to the site + a letter explaining who you are and why he should buy etc (also make sure it has a nice picture of you at the bottom with your signature and you dressed in a suit and tie)

btw how does one figure out how much to charge for such a website?

A guy named Justin Brooke did a blog post 'step by step system for getting more seo clients' Google that title and his name, plus maybe 'sitefling'. Should bring it up. It's quite a different approach that you may have more success with.
