too cheap to pay for ahrefs

Don't worry about it. Your not missing much really. Ahrefs free tells you about your site and what your doing, thats all you need. Building a successful website comes down to having good content, and a recognisable portal. You don't need to spy on keyword rankings and backlinks to make your content output better. lol
Ahref also has a starter plan for 29 USD, it is little hidden, but you can find it when logged in. This plan is enough for most users.

purpose is to check profile of expired domains since I am planning to experiment with a couple of expired domains.

I'm a cheapass too... and I also needed tools for the exact same thing
So, last year, after a bit of research, I found sellers in the marketplace that gave me access for 14 days to Semrush for like $10 or something (I don't remember the exact price, but it was definitely around $10, give or take $1-2). You can buy one of those accounts and I guarantee you that 14 days are more than enough to check expired domains. The problem is that the plan you'll buy has limits on how much stuff you can check, so you need to buy more 14-day accounts if your credits run out... But yeah, if you need access to Ahrefs / Semrush you can't beat those sellers in the marketplace... I only hope that they're still around...
