I have seen people say that buying a .io domain is not recommended because it is linked to a territory whose sovereignty is disputed and that the domain itself could potentially be shut down because of that. How serious is this risk and should I consider buying other domains and preparing for a possible transition?

Yes it is dying. It is a serious risk due to the territory issue. I would suggest to buy other domains.

The .io domain is popular, but it's tied to a disputed territory. While the risk of it being shut down is low, diversification is advisable. You can buy a .io domain and also register a .com or .net to protect your brand and facilitate a possible transition in the future. Having a backup plan is a good idea.

The basics come in here... purchase multiple TLDs to protect yourself. Also, if your domain is often misspelled, you can buy the slightly wrong versions of your domain name to protect customers from typosquatters. If your domain is 'speedops(dot)com' for example, you can register 'spedops', 'speedop', 'speeddops', etc.
