authority = when you stop needing new supporting pages to answer related queries.
for me it’s depth first. i’ll build 20–25 tightly mapped articles around one pillar until most “people also ask”, comparisons, modifiers and objections are covered. if new keywords start overlapping heavily with existing content, that’s usually a sign the cluster is mature.

breadth comes after depth. if you expand into loosely related subtopics too early, you dilute signals because the internal linking and semantic focus gets fragmented. i’ve seen sites publish 5 half-built pillars instead of 1 fully saturated one — rankings moved slower than on sites that compressed authority into one cluster first.

so yeah, expand too fast and you look scattered. saturate first, then scale sideways.
