Are fully dropped expired domains useful at all?

I found some really nice expired domains with juicy backlink profiles from some heavy hitters (DA 90+). However, these domains are fully dropped and haven't had traffic in a few years. Can i still leverage them? PBN or 301? Or are they useless now that they're dropped (whois reset etc)

The domains being offline for a few years will effect how long things take to 'kick in', but yes you can still leverage them. Check the backlinks are still active, check archive and hosterstats for any sign they've already been used for PBN/spam stuff in the past, check what anchors are being used. If they pass those tests get them registered and start experimenting!

Awesome! I'll give it a whirl. These are niche relevant domains and I did check backlinks on Semrush, and the domain on WayBackMachine. Not seeing any spam.

Be careful with that, if there are domains with +90DA that have been forgotten for years, there's probably a reason for it.

da 90+ and forgotten for years is usually a trap tbh . mostly those links are either dead or suppressed in the current link graph .
if they are fully dropped ( whois reset ) u lose the continuity signal which is huge now . auction domains always beat dropped ones for 301s cuz they never officially "died" in the eyes of the registrar .
if u do go for it , dont just slap a money site on it . rebuild the exact old pages that have those fat links ( check archive.org and recreate the paths ) . keep the topical vector the same as it was years ago .
the biggest risk is the "valuation reset" . google treats a newly registered drop like a blank slate until u prove the link context matches the new content . i’ve seen guys burn thousands on "high da" drops that never indexed anything above page 5 because they missed the niche transition .
check the actual rd quality . if its just redirects and garbage spam from 10 years ago .. let it rot . if the links are real editorial stuff from major news sites , then rebuild it slowly and let it breathe before linking out .

Sometimes yes, but usually no.
They can help only if the domain is clean and still has good links. Most dropped domains lose their value or were used for spam, so they’re often not worth using.

I mean, they will work if you wake them up properly, but as @Steptoe already mentioned, it will take some time until they kick in.

However, if those domains have some "juicy" backlink profiles and have not been registered for years, then they are 100% absolute and utter shit, I can assure you of that. Just check Archive and hosting history.

Decent domains will cost you these days, whether or not they have been offline for some time.

Dropped domains are almost useless, whether for PBNs or 301 redirects, in my opinion. They may work only if the domain is completely clean with no spam history. Otherwise, they’re worth considering only for churn-and-burn projects. For anything long-term, it’s better to avoid them, as they usually result in wasted money with little to no ROI.

Hell yeah they are useful. If they were strong they probably will drive traffic once reactivated. For redirects and for different niches it's good.

I routinely reindex dropped domains within a couple of days. All you need to do is put up content on the old pages and it'll come back pretty quick.

A couple of domains I registered in Nov and recreated using the old content, both were indexed in 2 days and both have slightly increased their stats on Moz and Majestic in that time as well. I have not built a link to either of them yet.

Imo, they can still work, but impact is weaker and inconsistent

Good for PBN or testing, bad for 301s once fully dropped, a lot of trust is gone

Fully dropped expired domains only work if their relevance and clean history still align—most lose value fast once trust resets.

They aren't useless, but they are much weaker now because the registration reset tells google to treat them like brand new sites,
You can still use them for a private network if the backlinks are amazing, it is best to just put some content on them first to see if they even index before you try to use them for anything serious.

Yes, they can still be useful, but only in specific ways.

If a dropped domain has clean, relevant backlinks that are still live, it can pass value again after proper rebuilding. They usually don’t work well for blind 301s anymore. Rebuilding the site in the original topic, letting it get indexed and crawl activity back, then using it as a supporting site or light PBN is safer.

If the links are irrelevant, removed, or the topic is changed too much, the value is mostly gone.

Still works if you know what metrics to look for. Domains with previous traffic are worth a lot as well.

Look at the most competitive keywords for gambling, and you can notice many of them at work.

Fully dropped domains usually lose most of their trust, so they’re only worth using if they’re rebuilt with relevant, high-quality content aggressive tactics like PBNs or mass redirects are risky and often ineffective long term.

Thanks for all the feedback guys! Much appreciated. The backlinks are still live but the domain is not indexed by Google, and no traffic. I might just test it on a churn and burn to see if I can squeeze any juice out of it. Cheers!

Last year I bought a domain, have built no backlinks. It was indexed within 2 days and it's stats (Moz, Majestic and Ahrefs) have slightly increased. I know the stats mentioned are not Google stats but the site got indexed quickly and remains indexed. I know this will rank when I put my eventual content onto it.

Expired domains / dropped domains do not lose their authority, this is such a myth and it is being perpetuated by AIs (not saying that you are one)

They’re not totally useless but once a domain fully drops and sits dead for years most of the real trust is gone. DA 90 links look nice on paper but Google usually wipes a lot of value after a full drop and long inactivity.
