YouTube Shorts Lifespan

What is shorts lifespan?
When I post shorts on YT, they get views for 2-3 days and this is the end.
But when I watch YT, I get shorts recommendations which are, sometimes, over 1 year old.
How is it possible?

You might notice a similar pattern on TikTok, where the highest number of visits occurs after the first few hours. Later, you have a chance of being included in the algorithm only if the content generated not only high watch time but also other factors, such as shares and comments. It's very similar on YouTube, only with a larger time span.

Same Happend to make i posted so many good short video which i edit for like 30 to 40 mints but this is one i just did copy paste and upload and got me this much result

Shorts normally get views in 2–3 days, then views are drop. In case of old video, you get shorts recommendations if the topic trends again or your style matches.

i thought shorts were dead after a few days, but it seems YouTube can randomly push older ones again if engagement suddenly spikes or the algorithm finds a new audience for it

Shorts don’t really have a fixed lifespan they spike when first tested, then can resurface anytime if watch time, retention, or engagement signals improve. Older Shorts get recommended again when they match current viewer behavior, trends, or search intent.

In my case. for first shorts I uploaded in a day, I get some views, but then the second, third, fourth, .... did not get any views. I don't know what happend.

I find it very short, like MrBest, they've dragged it out for months or even years without flopping.

This is normal, shorts don't "die" - they are being pushed in the first few days to test to who and where the shorts belong.
After that period, if your short did well and somebody searches for something that is relevant to this short, your short might pop up in their feed.
If the "hype" around a certain subject "dies", so does the short; if suddenly the "hype" to that subject is back, there's a very high chance the short will pop up again.

They usually take 2-3 days to accumulate, then they can shoot in a month or two. There is no specific shelf life.

This usually happens because Youtube's algo is trying to understand to what audience is going to serve the shorts. If your content is good enough, your reels will get pushed to your audience's feed again, if they are searching for anything related from your reels.

On YouTube, Shorts don’t really have a fixed lifespan. Most get a 24 - 72 hour testing phase where the algorithm pushes them to small batches, and if retention or rewatch rate isn’t strong enough, distribution slows down. The older Shorts you see being recommended usually had strong completion rate or consistent engagement over time, so the system keeps resurfacing them when they match viewer behavior

They generally thrive for the first 2-3 days (peaking at 24-72 hours during algorithm testing), then traffic drops sharply—especially after the September 2025 update, where content older than ~28-30 days is often deprioritized in recommendations, with the focus on fresh content. But! If retention is great, with lots of rewatches/shares/comments, it can resurface months later due to a trend or search volume; long-tail sales are still possible in evergreen niches. There's no hard deadline, but evergreen shorts are now less likely to drag on for long periods without new momentum.
