Are domains becoming more about control than creativity?

Now domains are mostly about control and ownership not creativity or branding.

Tottaly agree. The whole domain game shifted to investment and speculation.
It's turned into pure speculation. Squatters grab thousands of domains just to flip them or park ads on them.

I think that framing captures part of what’s happening, domains were never purely creative assets.

Even in the early days, the creative value only mattered because the domain gave you authority, continuity, and leverage over that idea. What’s changed is that creativity has moved upstream, into product, content, and platforms, while the domain has quietly shifted into a governance layer.

Today, you can test names, brands, and narratives on social platforms with almost zero friction. Control, however, has become scarce. Algorithms change, accounts get limited, platforms disappear, and reach can vanish overnight. That’s where the domain’s role sharpens.

So it’s not that domains have lost creative value. It’s that they now act as the settlement layer for creativity once it proves itself. You create wherever it’s fastest, but you anchor where you need permanence.

In that sense, domains aren’t less creative. They’re just no longer where experimentation happens. They’re where successful ideas go to stop being fragile :)

I’d say domains are shifting toward practical value over cleverness. It’s less about creating a fun name and more about ownership, authority, and long-term flexibility making sure it works for branding, SEO, and future growth rather than just sounding cool.

Yep, the domain is increasingly treated as infrastructure.
It needs to be defensible, transferable, and compatible with search, email, legal, and future pivots.
That naturally pushes people toward safer choices.

Do you feel domains today are still mainly a creative tool, or have they become more about control and ownership than expression?
They’ve shifted more toward control and ownership. Domains still allow creativity, but today their main value is brand control, trust, and owning an asset you’re not dependent on platforms for.

I mostly agree. It feels less like creativity being replaced, and more like a re-pricing of risk.

Creativity still matters, it’s just no longer the first filter for most buyers. With platforms, algorithms, and policy shifts becoming less predictable, domains ended up being one of the few layers people can still fully own. That naturally pushes control, stability, and defensibility closer to the front of the decision process :D

Yes, today many buyers prioritize brandability, SEO potential, and control over ownership rather than just creative or catchy names.
A name can be clever, but if it creates uncertainty later, it quickly loses appeal. And I think the names that move now tend to balance being brandable and operationally clean
