Internal linking used to be treated as a clean-up task. Add some links, fix orphan pages, move on.

Lately, I’ve been seeing internal links behave more like a primary ranking lever, especially on sites where content and topical coverage are already in place. Changes in internal flow alone have triggered movement without publishing new content or building new links.

1. What seems to matter more now is not the number of internal links, but clarity.
2. Which page is the authority for a topic
3. Which pages support it
4. How consistently signals flow toward that page

When internal links are aligned with page roles, rankings tend to stabilize and compound. When they aren’t, even strong content struggles to hold position.

Curious how others are approaching this now:

• Do you design internal links around page roles or just navigation
• What internal linking mistake do you see most often on otherwise solid sites

I’m seeing the same. Internal linking can move rankings on its own when roles are clear. I plan links around hub vs support pages, not just navigation. The biggest mistake I see is spreading links evenly instead of intentionally pushing authority to the main page.

Our main site has over 5,000 pages. It’s a nightmare to manage, but we’ve been doing it dripped. I could automate the whole thing, but every time I do, I notice rankings drop for a few months.

We use a hub–spoke strategy.

Automation works, but search engines definitely seem to notice when things move too fast.

That matches what I’ve seen as well. At scale, it’s rarely the strategy that causes issues, it’s the speed of change. Large internal shifts done too quickly seem to create temporary instability, even when the structure itself is sound. Gradual reinforcement tends to hold rankings much better than aggressive re-wiring.

You’re completely right. I recently learned that doing the same at lower pace I get better results. The question is what you are doing is humanely possible to do in this xx period of time? If yes do it if not scale it back..
