For new blogs, I usually start with long-tail, low-competition keywords. They’re easier to rank and help build some initial traffic and trust. Once the site has a bit of age and content, then I slowly move toward bigger keywords. Starting small has worked better for me than chasing high-competition terms right away.

Semrush is great. Using ChatGPT can suggest some good keywords for free. Google autocomplete/suggestions is an easy way to find keywords too.

I agree. This is 100% legit. It is now more focused on quality than keywords. Keyword-rich strategy worked before AI. But now, since the AI is here, Google now focuses on one thing that AI can't give - quality and a humanized approach. So yep, long tail keywords still matter, but only if integrated organically and not stuffed. And only if they are still relevant.
