Not really, maybe 50%. Review sites in particular could easily be rigged, you can usually find more information in related posts or tweets.

These days, even the 1 star reviews are sometimes made by competitors.

They cannot be trusted, the bad ones are probably often the legit, the only one platform where you can be sure the user has used a product is capterra, but their opinion can be subjective or bs still, I've certainly done some reviews there in exchange for money/favors

Positive reviews don't tell much.

I know someone who worked for TP he confirmed that most reviews can be manipulated, no idea how it got to be the go to for any confirmation0.

No. I don't trust reviews. We are blackhaters ourselves and we know how easy it is to post fake reviews on those platforms.

I tend to trust negative reviews more, and I stay away from companies that manipulate ratings. It’s usually easy to tell, especially from user reviews coming from the Far East.

Trustpilot is a signal not a source of truth. Patterns matter more than stars - same phrasing, timing clusters, reviewer history, how company responds to negatives. If you’ve ever run review campaigns you know how cheap it is to inflate or nuke ratings, so blind trust makes no sense - cross check with Reddit, Twitter, niche forums, even Whois age + complaints usually tells the real story fast.

I take them with a grain of salt. They’re useful for spotting patterns, but individual reviews can be fake, biased, or posted after a bad experience only. If I see consistent complaints or praise across multiple platforms, that’s when I start trusting it more.

Will actually depend on the content of negative review(s).

If someone complains about a rude receptionist or front desk or a noise complaint in a hotel or a hotel denying early check in I wouldn't avoid a business.

TrustPilot or most review platforms add value in ranking, building authority(for the search engine) and i highly doubt it will swing people into buying things. It will help a brand build authority. I don't think people really buy things because they watched a raving review on YouTube about a restaurant. People these days know influencers are paid. It will however help a brand get their product out there. It's marketing.

Also as long as there is a decent balance of positives and negatives it's all good.

Personally I don't recommend doing paid reputation repair/management to someone that has a minor % of negative stuff out there. Unless there is an alarming rate of negatives and they look to seriously rebrand. Everyone deserves another chance.

My 2 cent. A lot of times bad experiences are isolated in nature.
