Clone my own page for a secure backup.

Hey I had a friend of mine build my website for me, he used code & wordpress which I dont use.

Id like to make a solid backup, incase we lose touch or just for safetu purposes any idea how & where i could make a reliable clone that i could easily amend if needed?

If you have access to the wordpress login credentials , you can use this plugin to create a backup file

You can use the same plugin to restore the website when needed .

Mate, if the website is yours, you wanna read a bit, I mean WP is like bottom barrell easy, but not so easy to back up for a non tech person.

You must have access to:
WordPress admin access to export content (posts, pages, media) via the built-in tools.

Hosting/FTP/SSH access to get the full site files (themes, plugins, uploads).

Database access (phpMyAdmin / MySQL) to backup the database, which stores all content, settings, users, etc.

And you friend also has not got a clue.....he should provide you with an access file and have a back up batch job regularly in the first place not to mention update plugins and extensions.

I get that mate, just im not a site designer. Is that the only way to get a copy I can use at a later date if things go down?

Yes, mate only way.

You will also have to zip and send the back up to your own machine.

It really depends how interactive the website is, does it really need a database beyond being a WP site etc.

If you can just have a static website, get away from WP anyway, but it depends, usually, you need all of that, it is actually not so trivial to back up full stack websites if one has not done it before.

ask him to upload the project to github, and add you to the repo, that way you'll always have the latest he's wokring on, and if he stops responding you can fork the repo, and push it to someone else worst case

Will I have some control over the site then? If things go down ill be able to access it to make a reproduction if needed?

Yes, its not hosing the histe, it merely storing a record, i think you can subscribe to a repo, and have it pushed to your username? i can't iamgine you couldn't do this, maybe its the defiantion of a fork, you get all the updates as soon as the parent holder pushes.

Lol, no need to ask to access the dashboard as admin, the ZIP file is the backups.

IF you like, create a want to buy or hire a freelance thread and Ill help you with that, it is actually a good thing to learn this yourself, a bit tech skills have never hurt anyone

The code, database, and media files can all be backed up. If you want to be really careful with your WordPress site, you should back up not only the database but also all of the site's files (including themes, plugins, and custom code) through your hosting control panel or a reliable backup plugin. I never built the site, that's what I mean. Incase of any issues or I need to replicate the site for whatever reason I'd like to have a backup. As a "just in case" scenario.
