A big competitor is bidding on my company name. When people search for me, their ad shows first. I don't want to spend money on my own name, but I'm losing sales. Is there a 'dirty' way to handle this or should I just report them to Google?

Google allows competitors to bid on your brand, so reporting only works if they use your trademark in the ad copy. There’s no safe “dirty” fix, running a cheap exact-match brand ad is usually the fastest and cheapest way to stop losing sales.

Competitors can bid on your brand name, but file a trademark complaint with Google Ads if you use the name in your ad copy.
The safest solution is to run low-budget defensive ads on your brand keywords, which can save sales.

I’ve faced this too, and honestly there’s no “dirty” trick that works long-term. Google allows competitors to bid on brand names unless they misuse the trademark in ad copy. What worked for me was running a small branded search campaign it’s usually cheap and protects your traffic. Also keep an eye on their ad copy and report it only if they’re using your brand name misleadingly. Brand defense + strong ad copy is the safest way.

Honestly just outbid them on the ad. I mean you'd probably save more than you'd spend.

There’s no real “dirty trick” that works long-term and some can seriously backfire. This is one of those cases where the boring, legal options usually win more money than trying to be clever.

Outbidding is the only option, contacting Google won't help. This happens to a lot of people

Google Ads officially allows bidding on brand keywords. But, advertisers cannot use another company's trademarked name in their ad copy (ad headlines, ad descriptions). Advertisers can use a trademarked name in their ad copy, if they own the trademark or they get special approval for it from Google Ads proving that they have an official approval to use that trademark for the same.

Report won't work unless they use your trademark in the ad copy, so just bid on your own name to keep the CPC high for them or hit their brand keywords back.

I suggest that you don't get salty over it. The game is the game. Since they're bigger than you, what you should do is simply bid on their own. However be careful, some companies trademark their name and you could be sued for this, probably.

If the competitor is only bidding on your brand keywords at the keyword level, their ad copy doesn't include your company name, and their landing page doesn't impersonate you, Google allows this. However, in most cases, reporting them is generally ineffective.

Just bid on your own brand and report them if they use your name in ad copy, dirty tricks usually backfire fast.

Reporting to google is a way to stop them but they can use your name in ads etc. why they are doing so

you can challenge it if they’re misleading users, but otherwise it’s usually just part of the game.
