Hi All,

I'm relatively new to Youtube so would like some advice.

I created a small channel in the IM/SEO niche and I was getting impressions but my CTR was really low at around 1.2%. My thumb nails and titles were pretty bad so I updated them all (61 videos) over a few days and my CTR spiked up to 12%. But shortly after that my impressions have pretty much all gone.

My view to sub rate is 5.6%. I don't think my watch time dropped at all after I did the title/thumb updates so I don't know what's happening?

I did do a split test shortly before on 10 videos which caused a big spike in impressions but cancelled it after a few days if that helps.

Any advice is very welcome :-)

Do you mind posting your youtube channel, I'd like to see what you're working on mate.

I'm pretty sure you're ok posting your youtube if it has been requested.

From my experience, simply switching thumbnails should not impact impressions.

However, if you use YouTube’s thumbnail and title A/B testing feature, it can very likely kill your videos.

It’s a very half-baked feature that’s been implemented poorly. There are many testimonials on Reddit and Twitter showing that it has had a mostly negative impact on video performance.

Changing thumbnails and titles in bulk can significantly boost CTR, which is good, but for small channels, YouTube usually resets the testing process. When the system detects a major change, they will pause distribution to re-evaluate. A drop in impressions at this point is quite normal

Youtube is recalibrating after your thumbnail, title update. Post consistently and maintain engagement impressions should stabilize soon.

Really? From my experience whenever I change title or thumbnail youtube does a soft reset and gives me a bit more impressions

This happens pretty often. Big CTR jumps after mass thumbnail and title changes can trigger a re-evaluation phase. YouTube usually pauses distribution, then slowly tests again with fresh audiences. It’s not a penalty if watch time stayed stable. Give it a bit of time and avoid changing everything again too fast.

updating 61 titles and thumbnails in a short window is a massive signal change to YT. the system basically re-evaluates your entire catalog at once. YT often pauses broad distribution temporarily while it re-tests performance. that pause can look like impressions falling off a cliff, and I think that's what you are experiencing right now

This actually happens more often than people think. When you change a lot of titles and thumbnails at once, YouTube often “retests” your videos, which can cause short spikes and then a pullback while the system recalibrates performance signals. If watch time stayed stable, that’s a good sign. I’d give it some time, avoid changing too many things at once, and let the data settle. Gradual testing usually works better than bulk edits.

You didn’t break anything.

You only improved your channel faster than YouTube could confidently scale it. That’s a good problem.

Give it time, publish consistently, and let the algorithm finish its test.

OK I think either doing that split test or updating my thumbs/titles have killed my new little channel. What should I do?

This is normal because YouTube recalculates its algorithm every time you edit the title, cover, etc., which results in higher views.

should my impressions be this low though after my CTR went from 1.2% to 10/12%? I don't think its been suggested any more.

This is normal. Changing many titles/thumbnails at once resets YouTube’s testing, so impressions can dip temporarily. High CTR alone isn’t enough—watch time per impression must stay strong. Stop editing for 2–3 weeks, let data stabilize, and update videos gradually in the future to avoid volatility.

Ok I'll give it another week and see if it picks up again
