Not My Passion Anymore

I know this happens in almost any field or profession, but seeing it happen to two people I know just this year got me thinking : )

I have a close friend who is a web designer and quit designing earlier this year.

Just a few minutes ago, I received an email from a client I’ve worked with for a few years
Letting me know she is stopping or at least putting her web design business on hold, and ending our contract

Honestly, the business had a few hiccups this year, but what really caught my attention was the exact phrase she used in the email:
“it’s not my passion anymore”

That’s the same thing my friend said earlier this year when he quit design.
And just like my friend, she is actually very talented at web design : )

Has anyone here ever felt this way at some point in their offline or online career, even though you’re very good at what you do?
Maybe this is more directed toward people in design... IDK :/

There’s def truth in that... there was financial stress in both cases tbh, which might be what drained the joy out of almost everything for them

It sucks to see though because both were doing fine skill-wise and were genuinely good

Still... a part of me wants to believe it was more emotional burnout than just money running out : )

I am just getting a passion for web design, so when one loses passion, another gains passion, the show must go on forever.

I think it happens in every niche though, you can get a new passion growing if you are creative and adventurous, and that can make you lose passion in another area.

I’ve burned out of multiple services businesses in my 20s and multiple niches in my 30s.

It happens. We change. It’s unrealistic to expect that your desires will remain the same for your whole life.

Go with the flow. If you’re not happy dump it (or them).

Some of the best advice I ever got from an old timer: “If in doubt, punt.”

Never believe you’re limited to just one thing. Your mind is unlimited if you will try something new.

Is AI the reason behind that? Did you ask her about this?

That's the AI effect. If non web designers can almost match skilled designers, the real designers will feel pain and this will put him demotivated.

Yea, sometimes we outgrow things we used to be passionate about, and I think that’s actually a sign of personal growth.

Totally normal. Being good at something doesn’t mean you’ll love it forever. Burnout, routine, and client pressure can kill the passion even if the skills are still there. Happens in design and pretty much every other field too.

Expecting the same drive forever probably isn’t realistic. Maybe the real mistake is fighting the change instead of letting it happen.

My client actually felt a lot of that inner resistance throughout this year and she told me all about it because we’re quite close and she shared some of the difficulties she was dealing with.

Likewise, my pal... he wanted to focus more on engineering work like manufacturing. He’s actually a mechanical engineer

Following your passion is terrible advice for business. If you can only motivate yourself to do things that you are passionate about you will likely not make much money. Make your money then follow your passion.

Yeah, sometimes it’s not deeper than just being tired of it

That’s actually one of the things I mentioned in my reply. I told her she should really use the holiday period to rest properly and come back next year with a refreshed perspective

She had planned for a long time to implement a couple of new packages that would help her get paid more from her clients, but she was too engulfed in completing her current projects and handling ongoing life tasks

I think it all just became too overwhelming for her at some point, sadly.

Oh yeah… AI did come up in the conversation over time, but it wasn’t the main thing as far as I could tell.

She adapted well to AI and was also using it for her own projects.

In her case, it didn’t really play out like that : )
She was already using AI herself and adapting just fine.

The pressure seemed to come more from workload, expectations, and life stuff piling up over time not from feeling replaced or outmatched.

She gets most of her clients from local businesses and she has kind of niched down to her area

Looking back... it often makes more sense than it does while you’re in it : )

Passing such statements 'it's not my passion anymore' is just an excuse. Ups and downs are a part of business, cashflow dried up and suddenly it's not his passion anymore.

Passion doesn't put food on table. If something is your passion but not making you enough money, always keep it as a side hustle until it replaces your current income or an income that you aspire to achieve. People get influenced watching gurus on YT who pass big statements 'do what you love', 'follow your passion' only to later see reality kicking expectations' ass.

Totally get that. Burnout has a way of sneaking in no matter how skilled you are. Switching things up, even in small ways, is the best way to keep the spark alive and avoid feeling trapped in the same loop.

I hit another version of the wall....I made so much money and accomplished 1000x more than I dreamed of in the last 10 years....I'm not hungry anymore and I'm afraid it's a trap...I enjoyed so much gaming G and now that joy is gone.
