Why do people glorify being “busy”?

I’ve noticed that being busy has almost become a status symbol.


When someone asks how you’re doing, the most common answer is: "Busy"

Almost like being busy means you’re important, productive, or winning at life.


But are we really busy… or just constantly distracted?

Interesting, I've never encountered or noticed this and I'm always busy. And when I'm crawling around under my daughter's bed looking for a toy rabbit at 7am, I never think to myself I'm winning at life.

Also everyone’s definition is different from one person to another.
Someone might not really be busy but they may still tell others they are just to protect their peace

yeah, I'll admit i am that kind of a person, I like to have my day planned and I usually stick to a routine and hate when its inturrupted by a person or an unexpected inconvenience. and you're right, this absolutely doesn't mean i am winning at life, i honestly think its just my personality

Reading this i've realised that i think like that too, whenever i hear someone is busy i automatically create a bias around them.

But thats the way i think about myself too, i should be busy, i should have things to do that are important.

'Busy' is the word people throw around a lot these days because they'd rather be glued to their screens than go out and converse with others. Instant gratification is what most people want. If it was a priority to them, they wouldn't be 'busy'.

“Busy” has kind of turned into a humblebrag. Saying it makes us sound needed, successful, and in demand even if most of that “busyness” is just bouncing between notifications, tabs, and expectations we didn’t choose.

I've noticed that many of my friends and acquaintances just want to appear important when they say they're "busy." In reality, they're just relaxing, playing computer games, or watching TV shows. Sometimes it even irritates me when I know they're playing computer, but when I call, I hear them say, "I'm busy." Of course, there are people who are truly all in action, but for the most part, this is empty bragging.

I have yet to meet a group of friends that say to me in my face that they are busy.


Usually they just ghost me, so its implicitly understood.

Seriously this is what people always respond when you ask them "how are you doing" but well it depends on your relationship with the person.
