52k guests online?

Just noticed this:

Total: 52,801 (members: 325, guests: 52,476)

What's happening here? Nothing abnormal with the number of members, but all of the sudden the site gets 52k guests when it usually has around 3k?

I haven't checked BHW on ahrefs/Semrush of recent, but it could be that it has regained some lost keywords.

Admins with access to the analytics can probably tell exactly what's going on and where these guests are coming from.

That should somehow reflect in the number of members, but it doesn't.

Probably not the case but something similar happened to a few of my sites, way more bot traffic from Lanzhou and Singapore

The member to guest ratio is crazy lol.

But yeah I'd have to say it's mostly bots.

Maybe there's a way to filter bots out for the counter.

The best way is to block them is before they ever hit the server. On my server NGINX blocked 5,361 instances of “Mozilla 5.0” user agent alone yesterday. It’s a fake user agent. This is worthless traffic that never was able to load a webpage. Idk how much CF blocked first but with the right tools you can block the vast majority of worthless traffic while allowing what you want to crawl.

I just checked, and for those who don't know, the guest list includes real people and robot visits. Furthermore, the list can be filtered in the online member list by guests and by robots; there you can see the user activity. The robots from Google, Amazon, Bing, etc., are constantly crawling the forum pages, which makes the forum rank threads and posts extremely quickly, and that's a good thing.

I just checked and it's mostly guests. The robots are less than 2k.

I don't think there bots, the fact there viewing different posts makes it seem organic. If someone want's to boost his thread views, the person behind it would only send bots to his specific thread, which is not the case. Also it's the end of the year the traffic influx will skyrocket.

I just checked and it's mostly guests. The robots are less than 2k.

The forum software identifies bots based on user agent. Scrapers and crawlers that use headless browser won’t be detected as bots.
