Are image ads going to be phased out? In recent months, I've noticed that image traffic is significantly lower than video ads, but the cost is still huge.

video is outperforming them in engagement and CTR. Use video to scale and image ads for testing or small budgets they still work in the right spots.

Lately it looks like Pinterest gives videos more love, so image ads don’t pull as much traffic anymore.

I think that is not because Pinterest just users engage more with video content

Image ads arent dead best used strategically for retargeting or quick tests, while video drives most of the reach and engagement.

You could try combining short form video clips with static images in a single campaign use video to capture attention and images to reinforce the message, balancing costs.

Image ads are not being phased out, but platforms are clearly prioritizing video formats which is why traffic has dropped while costs remain high

Yes Pinterest is clearly favoring video Pins now. Image ads still work, but reach + engagement are much higher with video, so most advertisers are shifting toward video-first strategies.

Nowadays, users tend to pay much more attention to videos than images. Videos can convey information in a way that’s easier and more convenient for users to absorb.

Images aren't being phased out, but the algorithm pushes video now to keep users inside the app, which is why your static ad costs are rising

you're essentially paying a premium to take people off-site. Keep running images for conversions though, because while video gets cheap views, static pins are still the kings of getting people to actually buy.

Image ads aren’t being phased out, but the game has definitely changed. Platforms are pushing video harder, so video gets more reach and cheaper traffic, while image ads are becoming more expensive with less engagement.

That said, static ads still work. Especially for quick tests, simple offers, or low-budget campaigns. They’re just not the “hero” format anymore. Most marketers are now running images as support and video as the main driver.

I don't think image ads are going to be phased out, but they're definitely losing efficiency compared to video. Lately most accounts I manage show the same pattern lower image delivery, higher CPM, and Meta pushing video-first placements. It’s more about shifting performance trends than images being removed

Your observation is spot on: Pinterest is aggressively shifting its algorithm to prioritize video and Idea Pins over static images, meaning image ads are highly unlikely to be phased out but are being strategically demoted.

This shift is driven by Pinterest's desire to boost user dwell time and compete directly with TikTok/Instagram Reels. For advertisers, this means that simple image ads now require a much higher budget to achieve the same reach as dynamic video content. Your best strategy is to focus on Vertical Video that looks native to the platform, as these assets generate higher engagement signals (saves, clicks) that the algorithm rewards with better organic reach and lower ad costs.

While video ads are currently dominating engagement, image ads are unlikely to be fully phased out, as they remain an effective and cost-efficient way to reach audiences in contexts where quick impressions and low-bandwidth formats are preferred.

Recently, I've been experimenting with short videos and achieved surprisingly good results. Perhaps short videos are the general trend and receive more attention than images.

short videos just grab attention faster ıf they’re already giving you solid numbers, lean into them and use images as cheap probes.

I don’t think image ads are being “phased out” entirely but the industry is definitely shifting in a way that makes static-image ads less effective compared to video

Image ads aren’t being phased out, but videos currently get more engagement, so balancing both with strong visuals helps performance.

I think it really depends on your niche, but generally they do have a better percentage compared to images.

Image ads aren’t going away, but platforms are clearly favoring video for reach, so images work best now when they’re highly intent-driven and used alongside video rather than alone.
