Let’s be brutally honest: 90% of the B2B “lead generation” happening on LinkedIn Ads and Google Search right now is a sophisticated form of self-deception. You’re not generating leads; you’re generating vanity metrics to justify your marketing budget to a CFO who doesn’t know any better.

Think about it. You’re spending $50+ per click to target “Senior DevOps Engineers” or “VP of Procurement” with a gated whitepaper on “The Future of Cloud Synergy.” You get 50 form fills. Sales Development Representatives (SDRs) scramble, and 45 of those “leads” are students, competitors, or someone who just wanted the PDF to plagiarize for their own blog. The 5 that are semi-legitimate have zero buying intent and are now stuck in a nurturing sequence they’ll ignore forever.

You’ve been sold a fantasy by platforms and agencies who profit from your confusion:

· LinkedIn Ads: A pay-to-play Rolodex where you pay exorbitant CPMs to serve ads to people who are at work, not looking to buy. Their intent is networking, not sourcing vendors. You're interrupting their day.
· Google Search: Great for demand capture (someone searching for your solution). Terrible for demand generation for complex B2B cycles. Bidding on generic “enterprise software” terms? Enjoy burning cash on informational queries from interns doing market research.

The real truth? True B2B buyers don’t raise their hands via a PPC ad. They don’t fill out your “Contact Us” form after seeing a promoted post. The multi-six-figure deal is born in dark social: Slack channels, peer recommendations, niche communities, analyst deep dives, and direct outreach from a seller who actually did their homework.

Your PPC strategy is built on a consumer marketing playbook that doesn’t translate. You’re treating a 12-month, six-figure buying committee decision like someone buying a pair of shoes on Instagram.

The Controversial Prescription:

1. Slash 80% of your “top-funnel” PPC budget. Reallocate it to creating fiercely valuable, ungated content that builds legitimate authority.
2. Fire your SDRs who just spam “leads” from forms. Hire competitive intelligence specialists who can identify and engage real prospects based on signals other than a form fill.
3. Use PPC for one thing only: Competitive disruption. Run targeted campaigns aimed squarely at your competitor’s named accounts, not with a gated offer, but with a stark, direct comparison of their weakness versus your strength. Make them feel the heat.

Stop measuring success by “cost per lead.” Start measuring by “cost per engaged conversation with a verified, budget-holding stakeholder.” You’ll find your PPC spend plummets, and your actual pipeline grows.

Agree? Or am I just exposing the inconvenient truth that funds your department?

You just exposed the ugly truth 90% of agencies and internal marketing teams refuse to admit we're all busy optimizing for garbage.

When you say niche community..that's the gold, because you won't always have physical access, but when you do find a niche community online...it's good for me,
Because they understand your product and their problems
You don't needs Fuses to make them buy

ChatGPT.

Well I'm currently on a B2B outreach journey. My idea was to use outbound cold emails to warm the leads for my clients. So far I'm only a month 2. I tried B2C for a month one and it was terrible zero responses. The beginning of December I started B2B and got a little response but I stopped it because I find out that December was terrible. My plan is to start again January 6th. Your post was an eye opener because I was really stressing about how I would ever catch up to these guys and now I know that there results aren't what they hyped it to be. So thank you.

it’s the incentives. Most B2B “lead gen” is optimized to look good in a dashboard, not to drive revenue. MQLs, CPCs, form fills easy to report, hard to connect to closed deals. So marketers chase what’s measurable, not what’s meaningful.

LinkedIn and Google aren’t scams. They just expose weak strategy. If your ICP is fuzzy, your offer is generic, and sales can’t convert the leads, the platforms become blame absorbers while everyone pretends the funnel is working.

Totally get it, real B2B leads rarely come from forms—I focus on direct outreach, niche communities, and targeted competitor disruption instead of wasting PPC on top-funnel.

truth is most b2b ads are just burning money to make reports look good while the real deals happen in private chats and referrals. instead of chasing cheap leads just use ads to stay top of mind with specific accounts you actually want to close.

Totally agree, most B2B “leads” from LinkedIn or Google are low-quality. Real deals come from research, outreach, and building authority, not just form fills or clicks.

Absolutely spot on. Most B2B “lead gen” campaigns today are glorified click farms. I’ve seen companies dump tens of thousands into LinkedIn Ads targeting “decision-makers,” only to discover 90% of their form fills were complete trash—interns, students, competitors, or content scrapers.

You are not wrong about vanity leads. Form fills mean nothing if data is trash and no real intent.

Solid B2B comes from tight targeting, clean lists and direct outreach to decision makers not chasing cheap CPL.

Honestly, B2B lead generation is not as easy as it looks. Running ads alone does not guarantee quality leads, and many form submissions turn out to be low intent. In my experience, more focused targeting and personalized outreach work much better. The volume may be lower, but the leads are usually more serious and easier to convert. Quality matters more than quantity in B2B.

From my experience, it works best with LinkedIn and cold email, but only when targeting is tight and messaging is very clear.

In my case, B2B lead gen takes longer but gives higher value clients, especially when you build trust first instead of pushing sales immediately.

Totally agree, been there myself, B2B lead gen with LinkedIn or Google is mostly noise unless you target real accounts and use PPC for competitive disruption. Most form fills are useless, real wins come from direct outreach and value-driven content, not vanity metrics.

kinda true bro, most b2b leads low intent now, ppc good for capture not demand, real deals mostly come from relationship and outbound.

Stop wasting $50+ per click on LinkedIn ads and gated PDFs. Real B2B deals aren’t in form fills—they’re in Slack chats, peer referrals, and targeted outreach. Focus on engaged conversations with real budget-holders, not vanity metrics.
