DR restore?

I have used some expired domains to make website ( mostly for pbns) and never had problems with ahrefs untill recently. I see that all of the domains got their DR dropped to 0 or near 0.
Backlinks and all is still there, Any ideas whats up? what am i missing, and how to restore that DR ?

It’s normal to see expired domains drop in DR, even if backlinks still show. Ahrefs updates their metrics and may not count old or low-value links anymore. Also, if the domain has no new activity or traffic, its authority can fade over time. To improve DR again, keep adding fresh content, build a few quality backlinks, and make the site look active and trusted. Over time, the DR should rise naturally.

So based on your reply, buying expired domains with good links and metrics will get you nowhere, its comes to same as buying the fresh domain. I just don't believe that.

p.s. the sites are getting traffic, new content and links, its just DR that dropped, and its hard to justify links from there to clients.

Ahrefs recently rolled out a major DR update, and a lot of expired domains/PBNs got hit.

Backlinks still show up, but Ahrefs is now discounting old links, devaluing network links, and ignoring many “legacy” backlinks from expired domains. That’s why DR suddenly dropped to 0–1.

Nothing is wrong with your domains , it’s just Ahrefs’ new metrics.

How to regain DR:

• Get a few fresh, real contextual links
• Add niche-relevant content
• Avoid interlinking PBNs
• Build small traffic signals (social/Quora/Reddit)

DR will climb back once Ahrefs sees new, trusted links.

I get your point. Expired domains still give a boost compared to fresh ones, but Ahrefs now filters older links harder. Even with traffic and content, DR may take time to recover. For PBNs, the best approach now is adding a few strong, fresh backlinks from trusted sites to rebuild authority faster. It’s not useless just needs a bit more maintenance than before.

Ya, i know domains are still ok, but ahrefs is causing me issues now. Almost impossible to explain to client who is not deeply in SEO, why da hell did i link to them from a DR0 site. Seems that only way is to show to ahrefs that site is there to stay and build it up.

Ahrefs DR dropping on expired/aged domains is normal it just means the old backlinks lost value. You can’t ‘restore’ DR directly. The only way to bring it back is to build fresh, real links: guest posts, niche edits, or any legit authority sources. DR only goes up again when new quality links point to the domain.

Actually it's not normal. Dr dropping to 0. I think ahrefs is reevaluating how it weights the links and calculates the dr. It was long overdue. Semrush did it long back. It's happening not just to expired domains it's happening to regular sites too. Dr dropping to 0 or to very low number.

Forget about expired domains, even regular sites will have their DR dropped to zero if they don't have considerable traffic and no new backlinks for years.
