where can I get free phone number?

Hey guys!

I need help with something if anyone of you knows...

I am trying to update my Whois information for 4 domains that I have in my UnstoppableDomains account, but in order to update the Whois information I need to input a phone number (this is mandatory apparently), but since I don't have a phone number at the moment (it's not important why I don't have one, just know that I don't) and since I live in the middle of nowhere (with no access to phone shops and the alikes) I can't get one at the moment, and I do need a phone number for this task specifically (to give to ICANN so they can update the whois info for my domains / UD account).

So, does anyone know where I can get a free phone number (Romanian number I assume since I will be inputting my own country, Romania, into that form) that can let me proceed with the updating process?

I thought about inputting a fake number, but - given the state of online affairs these days - you just know that they'll want to send an SMS to that number so that I can confirm that I own the number or something. I did consider googling for free phone numbers like I did in the past, but I remember a few years ago that absolutely all of the numbers that I found in google have already been banned or blacklisted or something, because none of them ended up working when I tried them...

So now I have to ask for help here.... I also contacted UD support about this issue and they recommended VoIP, but I have no idea what this thing is and after a bit of (superficial, it's true!) googling I decided to not bother with those trickster sites anymore, but instead to ask for the help from the BHW community

So, if any of you can help me solve this issue one way or another I'd appreciate it. Thanks a bunch!

You could just rent a burner number to get the SMS verification code if that will be needed and all you need to make the update, I guess.

If you think it might help and you won't need the number for anything else later in the future, you can PM me and I will get you a Romanian number from the SMS service site.

I still have some balance on that account and the number is usually less than a dollar, around $0.5 or so : )

rent from where?? Random online sites? ... Although, I'd hate having to pay for this one random, quick task to be honest....

I definitely won't be needing this number for anything else. Now, whether or not ICANN will need me to have this number on me at all times is a different story, but I can't help them in this regard, so yeah... I guess I won't be needing the number in the future

If you're stuck in the middle of nowhere, VoIP is the move. Look for a provider that gives you a Romanian number and supports text — and that’s it for Whois updates.

For anything whois I would rather add a random phone inexistant phone (for example, picking a prefix that doesnt register phones) than adding one of those free (or even paid) PVA phones, or any other burner method (unless you really need to verify, in this case, I would go for any paid option like iSIM or eSIM, and if you are already paying for the domain, going the extra mile should be worthy).

I'm currently owning a legion of SIMs (some from Digi btw!). 1€ per month per sim and I'm also living in the middle of nowhere.

Regardless of what you do, you are not exposing too much your domains themselves, but in any case, the account that holds them because the phone can become an authentication method. For the domains themselves the primary contact for any trouble will be always the email. But holding account of a valid phone that its owned by anyone else, is never a good idea for any kind of ownership

And for free you are not going to own any phone.

yeah, I wanted to use a fake number but I thought they might want to send SMS, so that's why I created this thread.

But in the meantime I solved the problem (and no, they didn't send SMS), so all is good now. And yes, Digi are powerful af, as you put it, and I don't like it. I never like companies that have too much power, they start losing their rational thought and start getting tyrannical, but me alone can't solve the problem of companies if 99.99% of the other people don't care about it...

as I told you a while ago, you are rich, I'm not. So you can afford to have "a legion" of SIMs, I personally only need 1 of them (so I can keep in touch with the few friends and family that I have)... Of course, I can definitely afford to spend even 10 Euros for a SIM card, but at the moment I don't care about that, I have more pressing issues to solve (health issues, income and job security, tending to my mother's needs now that our father's gone, etc), so I hate spending even 1 Euro for something I don't need...

I hear you (I genuinely do), and I did think about it earlier. But I needed the phone to update my Whois information, it has nothing to do with logging into my UD account or managing the 4 domains that I have in there, which is why I wasn't too bothered by using fake number...

And if it ever happens that UD wants me to log into my account with a phone number I will buy one, or I'll stop using UD, whichever fits my mood at that time...

And for free you are not going to own any phone.

I don't want to own it, I only needed it for SMS in case that SMS is needed to update my whois information. But this was solved 30 minutes ago, and now I can change the nameservers of those domains

You can also check providers that offer virtual numbers for EU countries, they activate fast and usually accept SMS. It saves you from dealing with banned or recycled numbers.

Is Digi working with Telegram? Trying to register new account but it says 'verification code sent to your other device' and the code never arrives.

The struggle is real lol, I get that I have more than many people here, but I'm literally fighting for survival and exported my ass to Asia since I can't afford Europe anymore (even supposedly cheaper parts). I get that it's easy to get confused in my case since I actually live really comfortably (the currency exchange rate is insane, in a good way). But yeah, every once in a while someone wants me to buy something really expensive that I can't really afford because people forget that I can't actually afford these things xD. So, in a way, I can relate. Work in progress though, hopefully will earn more, working on it. Good luck with your finances as well, hopefully your electricity is fixed.

My electricity is not fixed, but at least I got a fire extinguisher now and the reassurance that my house won't blow up

And yeah, Europe has become expensive, while Asia and Africa cheaper (and it's all by design, of course)... but we will get through these times, we've endured worse and we will make it through this time, too.... enjoy Asia, though, I've heard that it's stunning, maybe one day I'll be able to visit it as I have so many places on my list...

But the thing is, free "public" numbers almost never work for verification because they're either overloaded or blocked by the registrars. For something as sensitive as WHOIS, the best option would be to use a private VoIP, even if it's temporary. Have you looked into Zadarma or CallCentric? They let you create a real number, including a EUR number, at a very low cost, but if I'm not mistaken, the last time I used them, I think they asked for KYC (I don't remember exactly).

A completely free number will hardly work for you. There are also mobile apps that give you a phone number, but they're usually only for calls; you also need to receive SMS messages.

Idk about Romania but in Poland some mobile operators let you renew your account/phone number for free (only for receiving sms and calls, no calling/sending unless you load money). You'd still need to get a (paid) starter but after that you can renew indefinetely without paying phone bill. That's what I'm doing with my polish phone number actually and I pay for sri lankan only since I use that for calls, etc.

the electricity is functioning well, it's just that there are random wooshes every few days, so I do have electricity and internet (quite good internet actually, which is surprising for me given where I live)

As for phone, I don't really need it as I never use 2FA, I only needed to update that thing yesterday. I will get a SIM card soon, though, as I need to keep in touch with my friends and family, so I'll get one the next time I go to city (hopefully next weekend)

So none of these stops me from working at the moment, and let's hope it stays like this because otherwise you're right, I'm screwed

but of course they're going to ask for my documents. Haven't you noticed how every company lately is a data mining company disguised as whatever (hosting, payment processor, VoIP, etc)?

But anyway, I already solved the problem, so I don't need to complicate myself with VoIP and other stuff that I don't understand or have interest in. And in a week or so I will have my phone number anyway, so I can do things properly when the need arises in the future...

There are sites which will let you do one time verification with mobile number. But if you need it again in future, same number is not available. For that, you will have to try paid services.

Just to add my ¢5.
I spent much more time than I wished to also find out that today you just can't get a free number.

If you continue searching you will waste so much time that you could easily have earned even via monkey work in freelance and buy a real phone number.

The only one additional advice is to search here for verifybox and ask for test credit. Then you will get one time verification. It's the maximum you can stretch out your luck.

It's funny how recently I also found out all by myself about Romanian numbers. Hive mind.
