Just went through a new study from Search Engine Journal about how local customers behave in 2025 and the shift is bigger than I expected.
Most people now decide directly from Google Maps/Local Pack and things like accurate info, fresh reviews and fast responses matter more than traditional SEO signals.

Curious what you guys think - are you treating GBP as a full customer-experience channel now or still focusing mainly on website SEO?

Yeah! GBP has become a full customer-experience channel now. Most people decide straight from the map pack, so keeping reviews, info and updates fresh matters more than ever. I still do website SEO, but GBP definitely takes priority for local results.

Google Maps is basically the new homepage, if your GBP isn’t sharp, your website won’t even get a chance. Smart players treat GBP as a full CX channel now, not just an SEO add-on.

I think GBP is turning into a decision point on its own, so I treat it like a customer touchpoint rather than a simple listing. The website still helps for depth, but most early actions come from Maps, so keeping the profile active has a bigger impact for me

Totally agree - GBP has shifted from “just another listing” to a real conversion asset. I’m seeing the same with my clients: once we optimize reviews, categories and posting frequency, the website traffic becomes a bonus, not the starting point.

Exactly, Google Maps is the front door now. I’ve noticed that businesses with optimized GBPs get calls and direction requests way before users even consider opening the actual website.

Couldn’t have said it better. People take action right inside the listing, so treating GBP like a mini-landing page is what’s working best right now - especially when paired with consistent local signals.

I agree. Google Maps is very important.
I checked my results for the company. Right now about 231 interactions, but that doesn´t really tell how many have generated the sale.

Of course, this is a local company. So mostly they will get the phone number and call.

I'm sure the same things are also on Apple's own map. But it´s harder to get your company to the Apple Maps listed.

still focusing mainly on website SEO?
Yeah, I came across that too. I still believe website SEO matters. Maps brings in the quick decisions, but some more serious customers want deeper info and trust before choosing, so the website is important for converting those people.

It feels believable because people now check Google Maps first, but it’s still wild to see it overtaking traditional SEO this quickly.

I focus on treating GBP as a full channel now. Keeping info accurate, responding quickly, and encouraging reviews has brought more real engagement than just website SEO alone.

Totally agree , local calls from Maps are usually the real conversions.
Curious though, have you tried tracking those calls through GBP’s call history? It might help you see how many of those interactions are turning into leads.

Yeah, same here. Maps drives the quick wins, but the website still does the heavy lifting for high-intent customers.
Do you notice any specific pages on your site that help boost those conversions?

Yes, the shift is happening faster than expected, especially in service-based niches.

Yeah...treating GBP like a real channel instead of a passive listing makes a big difference now.

Today, Google Maps acts as your digital storefront, giving potential customers their first impression of your business before they even visit your website. Google Business Profiles with accurate details, reviews, photos, and locations promote trust and visibility. An effective map presence improves local SEO, attracts nearby customers, and increases conversions, making Google Maps a powerful tool for local businesses.

Maps is first touch for many local searches now. If GBP looks weak people never click website.

I treat it like mini landing page with fresh reviews photos and fast replies.

I agree - that shift feels very real. Lately, I’ve noticed I also rely much more on Google Business Profiles when choosing nearby products or services. I usually check recent reviews first to see real experiences before making a decision.

It’s faster, more convenient, and gives a better sense of trust - as long as the reviews look genuine.
