Traditional SEO focuses on improving rankings on search engine results pages (SERPs) through keywords, backlinks, and technical optimization. GEO takes a different approach by optimizing for how AI models interpret and deliver information.
Key differences include:
  • Content Display: Traditional SEO delivers ranked web pages. GEO delivers real-time, summarized responses generated by AI.
  • User Intent: SEO matches content to queries. GEO prioritizes fully understanding user intent and providing comprehensive, contextually relevant answers.
  • Content Quality: While SEO values relevance and authority, GEO places stronger emphasis on expertise, experience, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness (E-E-A-T) since AI models rely on credible sources.
  • Optimization Goals: SEO seeks organic traffic through clicks to your site. GEO seeks brand visibility by ensuring your content is included or cited directly in AI-generated answers, even without a click.

Do you think GEO will eventually replace traditional SEO, or will both strategies continue to work side by side?

It's highly unlikely that GEO will completely replace traditional SEO. Both strategies will likely work side by side, evolving to meet different user needs. While traditional SEO will continue to drive clicks and website traffic, GEO will focus on brand visibility within AI-generated answers. E-E-A-T will become even more crucial for both approaches, and structured data will be key for AI to understand content. Think of it as an evolution, not a replacement.

While GEO and traditional SEO have distinct goals, integrating both strategies will be essential for maximizing visibility and driving both AI-driven answers and organic traffic.

Geo SEO is about targeting a specific location — optimizing with city/region keywords, Google Business Profile, maps, and local citations — while traditional SEO focuses more broadly on content relevance and authority without a geographic filter. Do you see more value for your site in ranking locally or competing on broader terms?

geo won’t kill seo, just layers on top. search still funnels traffic, ai answers cut clicks but boost brand mentions. smart play is run both: keep classic seo for rankings + conversions, then shape content so llms cite u. whoever adapts to both lanes wins.

Honestly, there will never be a complete replacement. Why? Because people still want to click, browse websites, and make purchases. AI can say "the best restaurant in town is X," but people will still go to the website to check out the menu, prices, and photos.

The approach has drastically changed, though. We used to optimize for searches like "order pizza New York," now we need to think about things like "where to order pizza for two with delivery in 30 minutes for a good price." AI loves long, natural queries.

And yes, E-E-A-T is no longer just a buzzword – it's critical. ChatGPT won’t quote some random blog by John on medicine, but it might cite your content if you're a real expert.

Here’s what I've noticed on projects:
  • Classic SEO still works for commercial queries (people still want to compare prices).
  • GEO dominates informational queries (especially in B2B niches).
My current strategy is to do both. The old methods haven't gone anywhere, they've just been supplemented with new ones. Structured data has become even more important, and FAQ sections are pure gold for AI.

But, honestly... no one knows what will happen a year from now. Maybe Google will change its algorithm, and we’ll all have to start over. So it’s better to hedge your bets and work in both directions.

I don’t see GEO replacing SEO anytime soon. Both will run side by side — SEO still drives traffic from search, while GEO builds visibility in AI answers. Smart marketers will probably need a mix of both.

Traditional SEO is the fuel for GEO.

An AI model needs to find the most trustworthy source to cite. It finds that trust through classic SEO signals like E-E-A-T, backlinks, and quality content. Basically, you can't be the source for an AI answer (GEO) if you haven't already proven you're an authority with good SEO. Focus on becoming the undeniable expert, and the AI will have no choice but to find you.

Great breakdown - SEO is about ranking pages for clicks, while GEO is about being cited or surfaced directly in AI answers. Both matter, but GEO is fast becoming key for brand visibility in AI-driven search.

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) optimizes content for
AI-powered search platforms like ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews,
focusing on being cited in direct answers, while Traditional SEO
focuses on traditional search engines (Google, Bing) to rank pages
and drive clicks from a list of results.

I don’t see GEO fully replacing SEO anytime soon. GEO is great for visibility in AI answers, but traditional SEO still drives traffic and sales. Blending both might be the real winning strategy.

Depends on cognitive level of Ai: wont need search engine filtration/ranking anymore (which is why current LLM`s using that data) which for the companies like openai to solve matter of months i assume, If the companies like Openai decide to eliminate this intermediary process they able to do it in essence.

Guys, don't fall for the hype about 'GEO' - it's just the basic principles of modern SEO rebranded by WH influencers wanting a new snake to squeeze for oil. Treat your site as a proper entity, give signals that it is a legitimate brand.

GEO SEO targets local searches using location signals, while traditional SEO focuses on broader, global visibility.

In this instance, we're discussing GEO as in Generative Engine Optimization, not GEO as in geographical location. Yet another reason why the acronym needs to die.

GEO means generative engine optimization

I’m planning to branch into GEO campaigns but still want to maintain my SEO projects without messing up my current setup. For those who started as beginners, how did you manage both without mixing signals or hurting rankings?

Both SEO and GEO strategies should work side by side. SEO stayed for a decade and now it's turn of GEO. GEO and AI is going to stay and people should work on improving the GEO inshort it's own Brand Visibility. Person who know's how to get in the eyes of AI crawler will lead the race.

Both, absolutely both, and honestly I get excited thinking about it because the brands that master both are going to absolutely dominate while everyone else is still arguing about which one matters more.

GEO won’t replace SEO they’ll run side by side because traditional SEO still drives clicks from search engines, while GEO focuses on visibility inside AI answers, and both ecosystems will continue to exist and influence each other.
