If .com had never existed, would domain names still hold the same power today?

Imagine a web without .com, no google.com, no amazon.com, no facebook.com.

Would domains still shape how people remember brands? Or would the internet have evolved into nothing more than a network of search results and social profiles?

Which TLD do you think could have taken its place or risen the fastest, and would that have changed domain investing?

There is already google and amazon without .Com
Amazon.de
Amazon.co.uk
Google has recently started redirecting everything to .com
So amazon would be amazon.us
Google would have kept local tld and .us instead of .com
Facebook mah, it's more of an app thing them a website.
It would be a mess with tlds all over the place.
.com streamlined everything.

"Without .com, the brand identity of the internet might not be what it is today. Back then, people would recognize brands through search results and social profiles, not websites. How much do you think the power of domains would have changed?

Can you imagine the internet without .com? Maybe another TLD would have been the new king! Have you ever wondered what domain investing would have been like back then? Share your thoughts ?

Yes, domain names would still be powerful but the internet would look very different.

Fair point, dude. And do you think those internet giants could’ve eventually created a new “.com” standard themselves?

Without .com’s dominance, domain trust might’ve evolved into multiple regional standards instead.

If .com never led, global recognition might’ve yielded to regional or semantic value instead.

Interesting take, Ranky. Do you think any specific TLD could’ve risen to dominate that ecosystem?

If .com never existed, the web would’ve looked very different not just technically, but psychologically. Here’s how it might have played out

I think instead of com, .net will only become the mainstream.

Exactly the psychological anchor of .com shaped global trust far beyond technical infrastructure

True but do you think .net could ever have gained that same cultural recognition?

Well, it’s interesting how influence shifts over time much like domain relevance

.net means network, so I think it would be a good alternative if there was no com

Maybe .net..
Fair point, how do you think user behavior back then would’ve shaped which TLD rose first?

I get that view, though it’s interesting how early naming habits might have steered people toward broader functional terms too, right?
