First let me say, am dev. Older school dev, before everyone included freaking ReactJS for a todo app. Back then, we would have to justify why Jquery is included.

First of, Google and the users are not stupid, all the caching and deferred loading is just putting lipstick on a pig.

Its how you build your site in the first place. You are using Wordpress? It will NEVER be fast, real fast. You are using ReactJS, it will never be fast, never ever, the initial load will be killer, even if you only load what is above the fold initially, it will be a shit experience.

Here is how I do, lets not speak about caching, throttling and all that, we just speak about initial page load, every file loaded , deferred or lazy loaded will be part of a round trip, depending on the protocol.

If you require Wordpress, if you cannot do this without libs and such, well, you are out of luck, you can only optimize.

If you know to dev and you want the maximum speed, it goes like this:

SSR html, plain vanilla JS, No scripts in the head section, all styles for the initial page in the head section. Do not load any unnesecary library.

I have a nodeJS back end, with an API build upon ExpressJS(make sure to harden your server for this setup, ExpressJS should not be exposes like that to the web, but it is a very good thin layer to build upon).

The HTML is SSR, all the JS is right there in the page, the JS for the page and the JS is plain Vanilla JS, no libs no nothing.

If you believe ReactJS is faster than VanillaJS, you have some reading to do. It is not faster and never can be.

Thats it that is how you do it, anything else will casue performance hits. The website has 97/95 result on page speed test and is a full production app.

Its no SPA but sure acts like one and you will never see any loading spinner.

There is a heavy heavy price to pay when using ReactJS and such, there an even more heavy price to pay when using anything Wordpress, they load so much rubbish, it makes my head hurt.

I have wordpress sites that load under a second. The more plugins and features you add, the slower it becomes. For CPA landing pages I use plain html. They load like flash.

The point to note is that server makes a huge difference. A server can make or break your loading speed. You can't complain about speed when you host content on a $1 or $2 per month shared hosting.
