How to start freelancing?

I need some pocket money and I am willing to write content or provide a logo design service for people, I don't know where to start.

I want to try Fiverr but there is a fee involved, is there anywhere that I can become a freelancer without having to dish out money?

Fiverr is free to join last time I checked. There is 20% fee per transaction. If that's what you are talking about.
You can also try legiit. Freelancer and upwork are outbound meaning you will have to bid to the projects.
You can sell at bhw once you upgrade your account to jrvip.

You can try platforms like Workana, Freelancer, or even Reddit communities (r/slavelabour, r/forhire) to get your first few gigs without upfront costs. Also, networking in forums or Discord servers can help land small projects fast.

Can anyone help? Three people contacted me, only one of them looks genuine, the other two are advertising something or it is some phishing link. Someone tried to pay but apparently I'm not verified? My email and phone number was email / text verified and I don't know what to think.

Typical scams and cutthroat competitors there, dont give email or talk outside of fiverr, heres what to do...

Answer all messages quickly so it helps your response time rating, I think only first message reply counts. Then you can just say things like "I am ready to help once the order is placed!" or "waiting for your details to proceed" or you can report it. Soon they will most likely be banned anyway.

This is a scammer(s) trying to get your account banned / flagged .
I have already confirmed with fiverr support , Fiverr order page will not ask for the seller's email .

I think you should learn to run ads.

This type of stuff requires you to sell.

There's an option on fiverr to run ads, but it's not available to everyone.

There's nothing free in business. I've never earned a free dollar.

If you only rely on your time, you'll end up getting average payment like... your local job would pay.

At best. Usually you'll work for free to only build up a portfolio.

You have to be like a wolf. Not like a sheep.

Try to sell your services on BHW. Learn some sought-after skill on this forum. I think this is the best option. It will be much harder to make money on freelance exchanges.
