How do you find a working partner?

Lately I’ve been trying to handle so many projects at once and it’s getting really hard to keep up on my own. I have a lot of ideas and methods I work with, but most of my friends aren’t motivated enough to actually put in the work.

I’ve been thinking about finding an online partner, someone who is as focused and driven as I am. The problem is finding someone who is reliable and can stay consistent without me having to check on them all the time.

How do you usually find partners who actually work and get things done? Any advice or experiences would be really helpful.

Try posting in the JV section. Explain what you are trying to do and what you are looking for, I'm sure you can find someone who's willing to partner with you.

Look for the online entrepreneurial and tech startup scene where you are and start going to events, so you can network. Some of the people who you're going to meet there are going to be useless douchebags, but there is a chance you might find a like-minded potential "co-founder" to work with.

Another option would be to change you thinking a bit and instead of trying to find a partner, start looking for employees. You'd still need to keep an eye on what they are doing and you would need to develop your management skills, but at least you are going to be able to reap all the benefits of expanding your business instead of having to share them with an unreliable partner that is not pulling their weight.

This is just from a bit of my own experience with a project I started with some friends around March. We were 8 people at the beginning, and right now I’m the only one keeping the project running

It’s not always easy working with friends especially when the project doesn’t start bringing in returns immediately. The idea was mine originally... I just wanted us to finally build something together since we’d talked about doing projects for years but nothing ever really took off.

This time, I managed to get everyone on board. I was honest with them from the start that it wouldn’t be all rainbows and sunshine, and that we’d have to stay consistent even when things got slow. All I asked from them was to put in at least a fraction of the effort I was ready to give.

In the first or second week after starting, I knew morale would rise if we could land a client early. Once I closed our first client... a monthly-paying one, I told everyone we should reinvest the earnings back into developing the project instead of taking cuts.

The potential was huge but they wanted quick money rather than building something substantial that could grow and bring even better opportunities later.

To cut the story short, I couldn’t deal with them anymore. It started affecting my work because I was basically doing the job of 8 people while they just relaxed, expecting the money to keep coming in, all in the name of friendship. I gave them 100% of the funds we earned, told them to take their cuts and cut them off.

After that, I hired just one person to help me manage parts of the project at a pace I could handle without burning out. That’s what’s kept the project alive up to this moment. Otherwise, I would’ve shut it down completely and marked it as another failed attempt.

I have no issues with my friends now haha but at the same time, I’m glad I let go of the burden of carrying people who weren’t motivated or willing to put in the effort to make something work

Finding a reliable partner is definitely challenging. From my experience, looking in niche-specific forums, LinkedIn groups, or even collaboration platforms like Indie Hackers can help. It’s important to start with small tasks to test commitment before diving into bigger projects. Clear communication and setting expectations upfront also make a big difference. Good luck!
