Is topical authority more important than backlinks now?

Some SEOs swear that content clusters beat links today. Has anyone tested sites ranking with pure topical authority?

Topical authority and backlinks work together. Google values niche expertise, but links remain crucial ranking factors. Best approach - quality content + natural links.

Topical authority is important but won't replace backlinks. Google never found a replacement for backlinks. Nowadays, they are giving high priority to social signals but still backlinks decide which sites rank.

Topical authority is definitely gaining weight, but it doesn’t replace backlinks - it complements them. Strong internal linking and content depth help you rank for clusters, but quality backlinks still push you past competitors. I’d say the sweet spot is a mix of both.

I haven’t tested it myself, but I’ve seen a few people mention good results from focusing on topical depth instead of link building. I’d love to hear real case studies or data from anyone who’s actually tried ranking purely on topical authority.

Yes, Google now ranks sites with strong topical depth higher than those relying only on backlinks.

Yes, I have noticed some sites rank purely on strong topical authority, but mixing that with quality backlinks usually works even better.

I’ve seen some sites rank really well with strong topical clusters and zero backlinks, but only in low to medium competition niches.
For tougher keywords, backlinks still give that extra push.
Topical authority builds trust — backlinks amplify it. Both work best together.

I've seen sites rank well with strong topical authority and barely any backlinks. If you cover a niche deeply with useful content and good internal links, Google starts trusting your site more. But backlinks still help push things faster - both together work best.

I'm also trying to build a site based entirely on topical authority, I don't have many backlinks yet but my ranking has improved quite well, so I think this method is worth pursuing.

I have a question on this topic, can the topical authority come off-Page? A pillar page or pages from a few sites with clusters below that have a link to the target?

I have a website in my niche ranking well and it only has one cloud backlink. Since it is hidden you cant tell but i think the owner is pushing links to the buffer page.

Topical authority works in low to medium competition niches. But in tough spaces, links make a big difference.

Topical authority definitely seems to be gaining importance, especially with Google getting better at understanding context. Content clusters help build that depth, which can reduce reliance on tons of backlinks.
That said, I’ve seen sites rank well with a good balance of both solid content plus some quality links still work best in my experience.

Content depth can enhance rankings through natural internal links while backlinks can still enhance authority in tougher niches

Both matter, but building strong topical authority helps with long-term trust and relevance.

Topical authority has definitely become a stronger signal especially with Googles shift toward semantic relevance But in competitive niches backlinks still act as the deciding factor authority builds trust links give it reach.

Both still matter, but topical authority is becoming the real game-changer. If Google sees you as an expert in a niche, your pages rank easier — even with fewer backlinks. Still, a mix of strong content + quality links is the sweet spot.

Yeah, topical authority seems to hold up well lately I’ve seen pages rank with strong content clusters even with few backlinks.
