To answer your question, my most effective method lately, especially for niches with fewer blogs to target, has been what I call "Podcast Link Building."

Instead of asking to write for them, I find relevant podcasts in my niche or in shoulder niches and pitch myself (or my client) as a guest expert to be interviewed.

The process is pretty simple:
1. Find podcasts using search terms like "[my niche] podcast" on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or even just Google.
2. Find the host's contact info.
3. Send them a short, compelling pitch explaining what unique insights I can offer their audience.

Why it works so well:
- It's a natural fit. Podcasters are always hungry for expert guests.
- The links are super powerful. They almost always link to your site from the show notes page, and it's a very authoritative, contextual link.
- It builds more than links. It builds brand authority and can drive direct referral traffic from listeners.

It takes more upfront work than a guest post, but the quality of the link and the additional benefits are often worth it. It feels a lot more "white-hat" and is much harder for competitors to replicate.

Just to add a specific tip that's been very effective: when you're checking competitor backlinks, look for their local sponsorships. Links from a local sports team or community event website are incredibly powerful for a local service business. It's an often-missed white-hat tactic.
