For Meta Ads,

I am confused on how to handle custom audiences, and retargeting.

I have gained experince using meta ads from trying affialite.

That was straight forward.

Now for my first business, I am confusing myself on the audiences, and planning for the future. For each of these audiences.

I have my pixel set up on my Lander.

I created a Custom Conversion for clicking one specific link on my lander.

My confusion is with creating different audiences, and using them later for retargeting.

I have a bunch of different ads ready to go, aimed at different angles for my business.

But each one I want a different Audience for.

For the first campaign, is the flow like this?: Sales Campaign ( I know I'm doing this one) -> then create a custom audience who clicks my link/ad to my Lander, specific to age and gender, then make sure it's set to view content?

Then I would create many different audiences inside this same campaign, for each type of ad.

1st Campaign runs. Then let's say after 500 clicks I want to retarget those audiences from 1st campaign.

I make a new campaign, and use the same custom audiences, but exclude people who clicked my specific link in my lander?

I created that initial Custom Conversion for that specific link click before making the campaign, and it's tied to my pixel.

So that custom conversion should also be gathering data in the background?

I have a few more questions about this but I will leave it at this for the first post in this thread.

I would appreciate any help. Close to launching first official business. Just need to figure this out

Yes, your flow is on the right track. You use the pixel + custom conversions to build audiences, then retarget them later. A few clarifications:
  • Custom conversions don’t build audiences themselves they’re for tracking results. To retarget, you need custom audiences (e.g. people who visited your lander, clicked links, or viewed content).
  • You can layer exclusions (like excluding those who already clicked through or converted) to avoid wasting spend.
  • Multiple audiences can live in the same campaign, but keep them separated so you can see performance clearly.
Think of it as two parts: conversions = measurement, audiences = targeting. Your pixel will gather both as long as it’s installed correctly.

don’t overthink. pixel events build ur audiences auto once set. start w 1 sales campaign on ur main conversion (that link click).

Yeah I was way overthinking this.

Are you saying to use the custom conversion for clicking the second link (link inside my lander), from the start?

Or should i run the first campaign with view content (train meta on finding users who click into my landing page)?

run straight on the link click conv if that’s ur real KPI. training meta on view content first just burns budget teaching it to find clickers not buyers. unless traffic low and u need volume fast, skip view content and optimize for the action that matters.

Start simple let the pixel learn, then build retargeting stacks from there. Your custom conversion will indeed log in the background so once you have enough data you can optimize directly for it.

You just need to: install the pixel and set up your Custom Conversion to start collecting data, run a prospecting campaign with a Saved Audience, create a Custom Audience from people who clicked/viewed, and once you have enough data, run a retargeting campaign to this group while excluding those who have already completed your desired action.

Set up your pixel and custom conversion from the start, run your first campaign to a broad or saved audience, let the pixel collect interaction data, then build a custom audience from those engagers and launch a retargeting campaign that excludes people who’ve already completed your key action.

Yes you’ve got it mostly right. Start with a sales campaign using broad targeting, then build custom audiences (site visitors, link clickers, video viewers). After enough data, retarget those groups in new campaigns while excluding people who already converted. Your custom conversion tied to the pixel will collect data automatically.

Keep it simple at first, then layer on more segmented audiences as traffic grows.

You're on the right track. Pixel + Custom Conversions will start recording data as soon as it's triggered, even if it's not used as a goal in the campaign.
A good strategy is to:
- Run ads to collect data (traffic, engagement, link clicks, etc.).
- Create custom audiences from specific behaviors (page views, link clicks, etc.).
- Remarket, targeting people who are interested, excluding people who have converted.
- You can create multiple audiences for each ad if your campaign structure is clear. Continue to monitor your pixels and audiences to optimize at each stage.

Glad you asked this because I've been stuck at the same point and curious to see how more experienced media buyers structure their audiences for the first campaigns

your pixel + custom conversion will track in the background. Run traffic first, then retarget by excluding converters and rotating new creatives.

It's actually pretty easy. Where I got stuck, even though it's my first business, was knowing I want to target different "stuff". Which meant more moving pieces. Meta just does a shit job at explaining things

I'm Curious.

Why are some saying view content first.

Others, track to the link I want.

Even though I'm not as experienced, my first instinct was gather data on those who click whatever link on want, even if it would take longer

Your flow is basically right, sales campaign drives people to the lander, pixel logs who clicked and who didn’t, and those signals feed custom audiences. After enough data, you spin up a retargeting campaign built on those audiences, exclude anyone who already hit the deeper action (your link click conversion), and keep showing fresh angles to the rest. The custom conversion keeps filling in the background, so your buckets get sharper over time, it’s less about creating dozens of tiny audiences, more about letting the pixel accumulate clean segments you can reuse and refine.

Thank you Jesus. This strategy makes sense as well. Then after a good amount of data is accumulated for my custom link click, I can run a fresh campaign to new people. Using that custom conversion.

Or will my "first campaign" become more refined over time, and it also has a retention window, so after a set time it will be shown to a new audience. AKA cold traffic

Think of it in two streams, the sales campaign itself is your cold audience machine, Meta refines who it shows ads to as data comes in, but it’s still prospecting. The custom conversion is what you later build warm audiences from, so you can retarget or exclude. Over time, the algorithm optimizes delivery, but retention windows only apply to your saved audiences, not to the cold stream itself.
