I tried and failed to get traffic from Pinterest, and now, 3 years later I want to give it another go: can I restart on this account or should I start fresh on a new account?

Start a new account, but this time take keyword research and optimization more seriously. Also, go for niches where you can realistically drive traffic.

Thanks for the advice. My problem is that I'm an ecommerce trying to promote my own products, so my choice of niches it limited by that

you can try restarting on your old account if it’s in good standing, but sometimes starting fresh gives you a clean slate and avoids any past restrictions or low engagement history.

You should start with a new one.
The old account will not get the same hype again.

You can restart on your old account if it’s clean, but sometimes a fresh account helps with reach and gives you a chance to try a new strategy.

What industry are your products meant to serve? You have to be sure your products serve an industry that is popular on Pinterest, there's no point promoting items to an audience that isn't searching for it.

I'm a jewelry maker

Jewelry is a popular niche on Pinterest under women's fashion, though not too popular but popular enough. You can still research for keywords to use in creating your pins. Surely your product must fall under one category of jewelry or other, it could rings, esr-rings, necklaces etc.

Yes it falls under all those jewelry categories, but it can also fit under some other categories that aren't directly jewelry related.
I have to understand why my previous pinning strategy failed so miserably though

Since it falls under those categories, use those categories for keyword research.

Then create pin designs noting the kind of designs that are ranking for the keywords.

I don't know your previous posting method so I can't tell you why it was failing. But what I'm trying to explain to you is what works.

Starting with an old account is a great idea, but only if it's already aligned with your niche.

Once you're set up, getting traffic from your pins all comes down to choosing the right keywords. It's important to remember that keyword research on Pinterest is a unique process and very different from other platforms.

So, make sure you're following the best techniques for Pinterest keyword research.

You can reuse your old account if it's still in good standing (not receiving any warnings or policy violations, and ideally, if it has some activity). However, if your old account was used for a different niche, it's better to use a new account for your current needs.

No need to start over — just clean up old boards and post fresh, trendy content. Pinterest rewards active, consistent accounts.
