Hey BlackHatWorld,

I've been working with virtual card systems for years, handling millions in transactions and dealing with every security challenge, decline, and user issue imaginable. Seeing tons of questions about VCC problems, security concerns, and "why did my card get declined again?", I wanted to create one thread to break down everything that actually matters to VCC users.

Who am I? I run a virtual card service and deal with the technical side daily - from BIN attacks to merchant restrictions to compliance headaches.
What's different here? Real technical details about why your cards work or don't work, based on actual transaction data and user problems I handle every day.

Core Topics I'll Cover:

Why Your VCC Gets Declined (The Real Reasons)

  • Insufficient funds vs. authorization holds - why your balance shows money but card still declines
  • BIN blocking - major merchants auto-declining entire VCC BIN ranges
  • Merchant restrictions - which sites block VCCs and how they detect them
  • Geographic restrictions - why location matters more than you think
  • Velocity triggers - spending too fast/too much triggers fraud systems

Security Mechanisms (What Actually Protects You)

  • Tokenization - why single-use cards aren't always single-use
  • Authorization vs. settlement - why merchants can charge deleted cards
  • Fraud detection systems - what triggers "suspicious activity" flags

Smart Usage Strategies

  • Spending limits - how to set them to avoid authorization holds
  • Pre-authorization handling - hotels, gas stations, subscriptions
  • International usage - currency conversion and cross-border issues

Technical Stuff That Matters

  • Card data lifecycle - what happens when you "delete" a card
  • Authorization codes - decoding decline reasons
  • BIN attacks - how they work and why they target VCCs
  • Compliance requirements - PCI DSS impact on card features

Common User Mistakes

  • Trial abuse detection - why services ban your cards
  • Balance management - avoiding "insufficient funds" on loaded cards
  • Billing address matching - why this kills more transactions than fraud
Real Examples I Can Share:
  • How merchants detect and block VCC BINs automatically
  • Why your card works at Amazon but fails at smaller merchants
  • How authorization holds can lock funds for weeks
  • Which decline codes mean "try again" vs. "this will never work"
What I Won't Cover:
This isn't about building VCC services or compliance frameworks. This is pure user-focused: making your cards work better, understanding why they fail, and avoiding common problems that get accounts banned.

Sample Questions:

  • "Why does my VCC decline even with sufficient balance?"

  • "How do I avoid getting flagged for trial abuse?"

  • "What's the difference between authorization and settlement?"

  • "Why can some merchants charge deleted virtual cards?"

  • "How do I properly handle recurring subscriptions with VCCs?"
Ask me anything about using VCCs effectively, understanding declines, avoiding bans, or maximizing security. I'll give you the technical details that actually matter for daily usage.

Note: This is purely educational. I'm here to share knowledge about payment technology, not to promote any specific service or provider.

Ready to solve your VCC problems with real technical answers.

Why are you not willing to share some insights or point into the right direction if someone wants to get started into this business?
Hi, I can generally point someone in the right direction, but making a VCC service from scratch requires quite an extensive legal knowledge, and I'm more on tech&marketing side of things. Thus I'm able to provide general information on the topic, eg why and when PCI DSS compliance is required and how it corresponds with the tech, but I won't be able to provide a complete answer on how the certification process goes and what else is needed to establish a legal entity which will be providing financial services. So, any general questions on the topic of building VCC service yourself are welcome, but note that I may not be able to give a thorough answer which'll cover every detail

Hi I would love to know how merchants decide which BIN's to ban and which not. For example I used 5.000+ different VCCs from wallester for a specific site. I used one bank where i got my cards from, the cards had like a few different BIN's. I know you can check banks w tools like https://www.bincodes.com/bin-checker/ but I'm more interested in how they filter out BIN's... is there like a data base of business banks / shady banks and they filter all their BIN's?

Understood. I was more interested to find out about the initial investment required to get into this business. Will a couple thousand suffice ?
Thanks
If you include the dev's salary in that couple thousands, I doubt that, 'cause team structure-wise you'll need someone who can do crypto, do the backend development (many VCC services run on php btw, but there are other options), someone to do frontend, a designer, and a legal guy for starters. Besides, you'll need to pay for the lisence, for servers and other infrastructure and banks usually require a security deposit ranging from $30k, so I'd say the initial sum is closer to $100k

There are many layers to this as:
(1) Big merchants do have some kind of a database where they mark BINs assosiated with high decline rates, suspicious activity, etc and they may ban the card, but not the BIN overall

(2) That does not apply to some giants like GAds, FBAds, Amazon etc as transaction volume there is too high even on same bins, so some unlucky affiliate marketer can spoil the stats for the BIN completely. Besides different banks may have the same BIN, so that's not the reason

(3) Talking about big guys like ad platforms, the payment failures usually happen due to whole payment setup mismatch, eg you have Estonian ad account with USD billing, card in EUR and some indonesian proxy (yep, there was such user on my service). So, the transation gets declined due to overall suspicious activity, not that the BIN itself is the problem

(4) Sometimes card issuer can ban certain merchants by MCC code. Usually that happens with SMEs and gaming sites, as banks consider them high risk. With wallester in particular, I know that they have advertising cards and ones for usual purchases, so all mcc codes not related to advertising are banned for some cards. Note that advertising include not only ad platforms but proxies, hosting and some other stuff as well

You've touched on a truly excellent topic. Due to my own work, VCCs are a constant part of my life. I have a few questions. I'll send you a PM now.

@LinkPay Hi, can you tell me what might help with top up $20 US WISE via VCC / debit?

Hi, what CC are you using?
Wise as merchant may declined by banks from certain countries as first is quasi cash operation and second some consider this merchant high risk
I don't think WISE support will help you anyhow, so the best shot is to find another card for which quasi cash operations are accepted

I'm wondering what bank to use, last time i got 6.000+ vccs from an online business bank but this time i look for an more lowkey non business bank or bank with a high amount of bins for the fifa website. I'm sure they will ban whole bins, mainly from business banks. but I stll need to find a bank which offers high amounts of vccs, do you have any advice?

Hi, and what purposes you need the cards for?
