From what I have seen in 2025 is that making an strong topical coverage with good internal building will beats weaker backlinks profile. But backlinks with high quality will make a big difference when competition is tough!

I don't see it as being the new backlinks, rather it should lay strong foundation on which your links should power your site. While you could 'easily' rank in easy niches with purely topical authority, on some other niches that are not easy where everyone is particular about covering topics in depth, you might end up needing strong backlinks. Backlinks that come from sites that themselves are equally very relevant.

Google’s definitely leaning more toward a mix right now: solid topical coverage to show you know your stuff, stacked content clusters, and then some quality backlinks to back it up. From my own projects, the sites that crushed it were the ones where we mapped out the whole niche and then sprinkled in solid links, instead of just going heavy on backlinks alone.

Exactly — that’s how I see it too. Links can open the door, but covering a niche thoroughly is what keeps a site ranking long-term. Do you usually build the topical content first and then add links, or handle both at the same time?
