I’m seeing more cases where a well-written, super-relevant blog post on a medium-tier site outperforms a generic guest post on a high-DR blog. Is Google putting more weight on the quality of the content the link lives in?
Yes, Google increasingly values the quality of the content surrounding a link. that's what I've seen the most with our stuff. I have many links on particular hosting websites that do well. but I don't have one on the front page of Yahoo... YetRelevance and context seem to be carrying more weight than just raw domain authority now. A well-placed link in a useful, on-topic article is likely sending stronger signals to Google than one buried in unrelated content on a high-DR site. Quality and context are becoming just as important as authority.
Google is giving more weight to authority site in this case medium. Super relevent content is the cherry on the the top.
feels like Google is leaning more toward context and relevance now. A link from a highly relevant page, even on a lower-DR site, seems to carry more weight than a random link on a big authority site. Quality content in the right context is starting to matter more than just DR.
Yeah, that seems to be the case more and more. Google’s leaning harder into context and relevance now, not just DR. A solid, relevant post on a niche site often carries more weight than a random backlink from a big authority site with no topical match.

The best of both worlds is providing Backlink worthy content
A highly relevant blog post with natural placement, solid content, and topical alignment can outperform a generic guest post slapped onto a high-DR site that doesn’t match your niche. Relevance, user engagement, and even semantic signals around the link all play a role now.
If you mean generic guest post written in AI then yes google is putting more value in quality of content. Be it in high DR blog or medium tier sites. They value content first. If it is so much authoritative site then it might be appear in a different mode.
Google now cares more about how good the page is. A link in an indepth, relevant article beats one on a high DR but generic site.

hahaha recent update from google is more focused on quality of the content but that doesn't mean google stopped looking at authority.
right now google is focused on quality as well as authority
I've seen this a lot lately. Relevance and page-level quality are becoming more important. A link from a mid-tier site to a tightly aligned article often ranks better than a random spot on a top-tier site. DR isn't dead yet - it's just not enough on its own.
Why Content Quality Comes First:
- Google’s algorithms (especially with AI like SGE and HCU) prioritize helpful, original, user-focused content.
- Even the best backlinks won’t help weak or generic content rank well anymore.
- High-quality content earns natural backlinks, engagement, and trust — which boosts SEO long-term.
When Link Quality Still Matters:
- For competitive niches, strong backlinks from authoritative, relevant sites can give you an edge.
- But low-quality or spammy links can hurt your rankings more than help.
