Does Google penalize you for Guest links or link exchanges?

A few exchanges are fine, but don’t do them massively or too frequently, or else Google may catch you and issue a penalty or warning for unnatural link building tactics.

Google usually doesn’t penalize natural guest links or honest link exchanges, but spammy or manipulative links can cause penalties.

Hi,

I am building up links for a travel-related blog, so I contacted other travel blogs and asked if they would do a link exchange.

Example:
I post an article (2200 words) with a contextual link to their site; in exchange, they add a link back to my site, either in a new article or in an existing one.

My site has a DA of around 17, and I am networking with other sites with DAs of 20 - 35.

Will Google slap me for this, or is it more accepted? I looked online (on Google) and did not find a good answer, so I posted here.

Thoughts?
google’s chill with lowkey link swaps if it’s natural and not spammy. just don’t go overboard or make it obvious you’re trading links all the time

Thanks, everyone, for all the responses and the insight into this.

It's a very fascinating world, this link building and web page growth.

Link exchanges are acceptable by Google as long as they remain moderate, natural, and between relevant websites. Avoid excessive linking or automated schemes. To stay within best practices, diversify your strategies (guest blogging, high-quality content, creative partnerships). Always prioritize value for the readers.

Link exchanges are almost always going to get caught by Google which is why it has not been mainstream SEO since 2013 or so.
But did they get caught !

Link exchanges are not acceptable to Google and can be risky. Google considers reciprocal linking part of link schemes if it’s done to manipulate rankings. It may ignore such links or worse, penalize the sites, algorithmically or manually.

Google may penalize guest posts or link exchanges if they’re done just to manipulate rankings. But if they’re natural, relevant, and add real value, they're usually safe.

Yes, if overused or done unnaturally, Google can penalize guest links or link exchanges. Keep it relevant and natural.

Google doesn’t like link exchanges if they’re obvious or done at scale. That said, small-scale, natural-looking swaps between relevant sites (like yours) are usually fine. Just don’t use exact patterns, don’t swap in the same article, and don’t overdo it.
Let mix it up with guest posts, unlinked brand mentions, citations. Keep it looking organic. If Your DA range is decent just focus on quality, not quantity.
