Like most of the seo expert already mentioned its importance. I also think it is a good practice to keep it close to keywords or alt keywords.

And this is not stuffing as well. Its a part of image SEO as well. But that doesn't mean you put all the related words in the file. Just keep it simple.

Also to add - depends on the type of image. If you're doing store images with locations for GBP/Store Pages - looking at the metadata (embedded data on images, not meta titles/descriptions) and ensuring that the location metadata is accurate to the location can be beneficial.

Also - crawlers etc. can't understand images. So the question to ask yourself is "How can a crawler/search engine/LLM understand what this image is about?" - You have image name, you have alt text, you have image metadata, you have link context if it's an anchor, that's about it.

It used to matter long ago, but nowadays AI knows exactly what the image contains, so the filename hint isn't as strong a signal as it was back in the day

In the past, several years ago I had edited a large number of image file names and then did re-direct to the old names as the URL of the image changes and also added ALT names and on the whole I did saw some traffic coming from Google image search.

The effort is too much, the result isn't huge but there will be some traffic increase. If you have time then I would suggest you to do it.

I’ve audited a couple of big ecom sites before honestly, renaming thousands of product images rarely moved the needle. Alt tags and surrounding text are way more influential for ranking. It matters a lot, in my experience, I had experience when my article was not ranked by article url but through Imge url, and it appeard on top of the search when people were searching with that specific keyword and clicked on images
