Do Links Still Matter Or Have We Just Gotten Better at Justifying Them?

We still build links, but:

  • Traffic is often driven by content, not the backlink
  • Conversions happen because of trust, not DR
  • Many top ranking pages have weaker link profiles but better UX

Are links now more of a psychological comfort for clients than a ranking driver? Or are we just getting smarter at blending them into bigger strategies?

Links still matter, just differently. They’re no longer the #1 ranking factor, but they reinforce authority and trust. Today, content, UX, and conversions rely more on relevance and experience than link counts. Smart SEOs now use links as one tool in a bigger strategy, and yes, sometimes they’re as much for client confidence as for algorithms.

They have certainly lost their prominence.

They are best treated like a cherry on top these days.

But they can still make a difference if all other factors are satisfied equally.

They often have hidden PBN links.

Or are we just getting smarter at blending them into bigger strategies.
This.

Links still matter, maybe not as much as they did in the past but still matter very well. There are keywords you'd never rank for without good links backing your site. But that would on happen if your site itself covers the topic very well. Content is the foundation for everything unlike before when it was all links.

Absolutely well said. Links still matter, but only when paired with solid, topic driven content. It iss no longer about just getting links, but earning them through content that actually deserves to rank.

At this point, it is really about balance strong content builds the base, and quality links push it into the spotlight.

Good chat! Always great to hear different takes from people who have been in the trenches.

Yeah, totally that’s a solid way to put it. Links used to carry the weight, now they just complete the picture.

We have noticed that in competitive SERPs, it islike the final 10% push assuming the content, UX, and topical depth are already dialed in. Out of curiosity are you seeing stronger impact from niche relevant links these days, or still leaning on authority plays?

Links will always matter. Especially in the main search engines like Google, Bing, etc...

Agreed links will always matter, especially in Google’s ecosystem.

I have seen links work best when they are supporting strong content and user experience not just thrown in for ranking’s sake.

Interesting point.
I agree that content and user experience have become central to driving traffic and conversions.
Links still play a role, but more as part of a bigger strategy rather than a standalone factor.
Blending quality content, UX, and natural link-building seems to create more lasting results.
Curious how others balance these elements in their campaigns.

People using google are on decline. You should explore other platforms like social media to target users.

Links still matter a lot, but now quality and relevance are more important than quantity.

Links still matter, but relevance, UX, and trust drive results more than DR. Focus on high-quality content and strategically placed backlinks to boost authority and conversions effectively.
