Since WH SEO is widely thought to be less effective than in past years (see many, many "is SEO dead?" recent BHW threads on the matter), the damage done to a site by Google lowering its ranking is accordingly also less. The tendency for Google to negatively impact even the most stridently pro WH sites with algo updates has increased, making the impact of Google on either BH or WH campaigns largely a wash.

Getting caught with black hat SEO can ruin everything fast ,whether it’s rankings collapsing, traffic disappearing, or your domain getting manually blacklisted. Once Google decides a site’s crossed the line, recovery becomes messy and long, and in some cases, not even worth it.
That said, not every penalty is fatal. Some just tank performance without removing you from the index, but you’ll still feel it hard ,especially if the site was your main traffic source.

To repeat, WH techniques are increasingly becoming unreliable, due to changes happening with Google itself, which makes over-reliance on G dangerous for the stability of your traffic. That trend will continue, though BH approaches accordingly have to also make adjustments. That's why black hat methods are to be best used on a short term basis, such as over a few weeks, then shifted to a different short term BH campaign, to avoid detection. Couple this with several non-Google dependent traffic sources (social, forums etc), it will basically shield you from the penalties, and you have a better overall model for long term sustainable growth.

As you see from all the crying on X and Reddit after a Google update, every website, no matter how 'White Hat' they think they are, can all suffer the consequences of traffic and income loss from losing ranks. Diversification is your best shield against this.
