How do search engines like Google detect and penalize Black Hat SEO practices?

There are 2 main ways:
1) algo penalty, Google release update to its search algorithm that detects specific practice(s) and penalizes the site by deranking and deindexing them.
This don't show on GSC

2) manual penalty, this will show on GSC where someone from google manually give penalty. Example if you get caught using link exchange or buying links or if you are using doorway pages.

Google uses ai like rank brain, bert to spot black hat seo like keyword stuffing or cloaking, penalizing with ranking drops or deindexing

How do search engines like Google detect
1) they track and analyze your every interaction when you're logged into your google account and / or use the Chrome browser

2) they look for unnatural patterns that both the humans and the bots do on their platforms (google, YT, chrome, google sheets, etc) and draw conclusions from those patterns on them alone, or they compare these patterns against the history and / or behaviour of humans / bots to draw other types of conclusions

3) they keep a history of ALL of the data that they gather about everyone and everything, and analyze it and compare this data against other batches of data, or patterns, or profiles to "figure out" where our weaknesses are so they can profit more from them

penalize Black Hat SEO practices?
worst case scenario that I've seen is they deindex the website. Best case scenario is nothing happens and you get away with making a lot of money until google catches you.

It doesn’t detect “black hat” as a category, it detects patterns. Stuff like repeated anchor text, link velocity spikes, thin pages ranking too fast, or off-topic content clusters all create statistical anomalies. Some triggers are automated (deindexing, suppression), others come from manual reviews, especially if flagged via Search Console reports.

It’s not about one tactic, it’s about how the full footprint looks over time. The smarter setups blend in, rotate anchors, control velocity, and diversify source types. The sloppier ones leave trails, and that’s what gets penalized.
