It can result in updation of content automatically in the form of useful comments but there is demerit also that lot of people spam with their links. Do you keep comments on your blog or you keep them off ?

I keep them on default (requires approval). Spam is a big problem, using recaptcha with comments reduces the spam considerably.
Totally disabling is also a solution that I am thinking.

I usually keep comments on—helps with engagement and sometimes even gives new content ideas. But yeah, the spam is real, so I just moderate them strictly.
