How realistic is it to get backlinks by posting quality content?

Many bloggers, speakers at conferences say - post quality and interesting content and you will get free backlinks to it. Like people will read, they will like and link to your content themselves.
Had a lot of projects (both my own personal and client projects). Many of them had authored, expert content written by real professionals and experts. Sometimes I personally wrote content on my own projects (on topics I am well-versed in). But never once did I get a free link to the content simply because it was interesting.

Gentlemen, please share your opinion and experience. Who managed to get such free links?

Yes, as an example, I have a university/college link on one site, and I wouldn't have got it unless the lecturers at the uni though my site was valuable enough to put on the uni resources board or wherever I get the visits from...

bro u said it right.. ppl say “post great content n links will come” but in real life its rare unless u in super hot niche or already have strong audience. even expert content dont pull links by itself, u gotta promote it hard. outreach, share in right circles, sometimes even ask for links. content is just step one, without push it just sits there. so yea free links happen but way less than ppl claim on stage lol. gotta be active with it.

Frankly, it's not very realistic anymore. Unless your site is already attracting a lot of traffic by itself. People rarely link to a small unknown website.

Its possible but depend the niche you are working. Also, sometimes in order to get thise backlinks you need to be first (organic or paid) to be cited as a source. You can plan the content by looking the backlinks from competitors and see what attracts backlinks naturally, and make something better. But it takes time.

It's not very common, especially if your website is newly-created. If you have a well established website with some authority, it may receive some organic backlinks

Nobody will link to god-knows-whom so you need to have some authority and rankings for people to naturally link to you.
You might have the best content on the planet but if nobody can find it or nobody trusts it... well then nobody will link to it.

It’s the SEO version of the tooth fairy. sounds nice, but rarely shows up. Great content alone is like baking a perfect cake and hiding it in your basement. If no one sees it, no one links. You gotta do outreach, distribution, maybe a bit of ego-bait. Free links do happen, but only if your content is useful and lands in front of the right eyeballs… which usually means some hustle behind the scenes.

Nobody will tell you they pay for links, otherwise, clients will not buy their "services".
Marketers just pay for their links, and advertise aggressively, until they get like 5-10 natural links.
It's best to just promote yourself on forums if you don't have the cash for premium domains or buying links.

It is very realistic. It should be used by every blogger with limited budget because you can get high quality links without any additional cost with this approach .
