You don't need a special author account - any logged-in user can edit most Wikipedia pages. Just make sure your content is legit, matches the origianl link's intent, and does not feel promotional. Edits with helpful sources usually stick better.

Have tried this and my link was removed within 2 days even though it was a direct replacement (both articles were on the very same topic).
So it's not as easy as it sounds to replace broken links with yours.

Yeah. I've had succes though buying edits from aged accounts.
