Host locally matters. Right?

Hey guys, I'm in the process of creating a full white hat site that would rank well under localized keywords. for example <<insert city name>> web design. Therefore it matters a lot to google if i host it locally right?

You don't have to get local on the city level, but it's a good idea to get local hosting on the country level. If you're targeting U.S. traffic, then get a host in the U.S.

I don't know whether that would give you any more of a boost than the country-level hosting. Besides, it may be difficult to find a web host in every city that you want to target, and even though the company itself might be located in one city, they could be renting servers from a data center in another city.

You probably want to host in the same country your in, but since my website has Warez I host in Germany on a dedicated server.

I only host domestically for my hosting services, that way I can hold my hosting support companies responsible and pay their facilities visits to make sure they are actually doing what they claim all the way around.

As for the local marketing aspect, I normally setup a page per region that I want to advertise in and target the landing keywords to that sub page of my site, directing clients to their locally targeted information.

As for your options of hosting, in your specific location being Canada, it shouldn't be a problem for you to get a U.S. based hosting account, as we are under primarily the same trade/service laws.

I'm guessing not much too.

I have several website hosted in Canada and they rank very well on Google Canada Significantly better than on Google US.

However, finding a good host in Canada is harder than finding a good host in the US

Hosting on the country level and where the IP address is registered, definitely plays "some" role in ranking in that country, albeit minor. However, on a city level? I seriously doubt it has any real impact at all. A simple question to ask is "how many sites are hosted in their own city" and the answer would be "almost zero". If that was true, then why would it play any role at all? Hosting in Alberta for a business doesn't make the site a better result for a search in Alberta.
