Having some prior SEO knowledge will help you build a nice Silo structure on your website! You could reduce technical and on-page errors with the help of yoast or similar plugins. So it's good to have some knowledge before starting!

if you care about ranking in google I think learning basic SEO is actually important because there is a first impression thing between new sites and google, and if google marks your site as bad / poor quality / non-optimized it might allocate a low crawl budget to it and refuse to visit it often and even index many of its pages.

Besides, as ninzaseo said, site structure (and technical SEO in general) is an important part of the ranking process, so if you want to stand a better chance at ranking in google you do need to implement some of these basic SEO tips.... Of course, this doesn't mean that even if you do build your site according to google's specs you will still rank. But you have a higher chance at ranking... or at least at making a good first impression

Basic SEO is sure going to help but understanding UX matters as well. Understand, how some websites create strong impact while others look boring. Read books like Don't Make Me Think by Steve Krug. Study some competitors who are in your industry to better understand what you should add on your website. Understand color theories.

While for Basic understanding of SEO read articles from MOZ, Backlinko, SEJ. Building basic website is not tough. Ask questions in forum.
