How to login to VPS using SSH?

I just purchased a vps for $1 from https://hammervm.com - problem is, I can't login, it says `Network is unreachable` on my PuTTy....

The IP is a bit weird, its like 2a04:xxxx:xxxx:xx

Any help? I made a support ticket, but they maybe not gonna reply today.

It's an IPv6 address. It's strange that a VPS only offers you such type of IP, generally they should offer both options, an IPv6 and a regular IPv4 address.

There are only two ways to connect there:
1. That your ISP provides you with an IPv6 address, which is unlikely still nowadays
2. Using an IPv4 to IPv6 tunnel, check Teredo tunneling

Are you on Windows 10/11? Then you don't need puTTY atall. You could just do:

ssh username@ip

from your command prompt/powershell and it should work just fine.

As for the ipv6 IP, it should work just fine if you try to ssh into it. It does not matter to ssh whether the IP is v4 or v6.

There's a few things you could check:

1) Make sure the SSH port is correct. I know some hosts have the ssh service running on a different port. This is a security mechanism to stop login attempts by automatic programs. If it is a different port, you need to use the following ssh command:

ssh user@ip -p portnumber

2) Make sure the IP is correct and you are using it in user@IP format.
3) SSH port is open and the VPS is up. Might sound stupid but some devices have ssh disabled by default (for example, raspberry pi).

I know Vultr is also going that route if you buy the cheapest $2.50 VPS they have, seems like they are trying to cut costs just, same as OP`s cheapest VPS.

Good to know. Unless you are testing something or creating some sort of micro service that can actually connect to ipv6 devices, it's completely useless. Probably some people might fall. I got one $1 VPs recently from a IONOS reseller called piensasolutions, and despite is massively low on resources the ipv4 is there (which blows my mind because some other Vps hostings charge you X2 just for the IP).

Putty is the best option to login to VPS. You have an IPv6 address, which is common in cheap hosting.

Contact support, to see if the servers are running fine.

To connect to a device on IPv6, your local machine should also have an IPv6 address as they are different protocols entirely.

Your ISP might not have switched to IPv6 yet, so connections to IPv6 address will fail. Check on one of those ipv6 test sites to confirm.

I did give it a shot, and my server was working immediately.

I did notice tho, they don't give us root logins, only OS-level like ubuntu debian centos user with sudo access, idk how I feel about that, although its good for security and not a BIG issue cause u can renable root login from ssh.

To log into your VPS via SSH, you can use a terminal (on Mac/Linux) or tools like PuTTY (on Windows). Just enter: ssh username@your-server-ip — and it'll prompt for your password. Make sure SSH is enabled on your VPS and port 22 is open in your firewall settings.

I have a ionos vps kvm, and they make your server login very easy as root. A lot of vps providers have root login disabled in their ssh console like Hetzner (I tried one last year) and I was not able to login into that Hetzner vps with ssh keys, was too complicated for me, login as root, easy and simple. Ask the provider first before you buy a vps if they have that easy root login ! Their ionos vps run smooth and fast yep, but a little con side is they run on 2-2.4Ghz clock speed, not 3,5- 4,2Ghz. And a lot of vps providers have shitty bandwith speed throttled to 100-200mbps instead of 1GB.

With a 2cpu+4gb ram vps with bandwith speed of 100-200mbps , you can't handle 100k visitors a month (example) , heck this server will crash on 500 current users at same time.

What drives my nerves are dedicated servers most providers offer, something like; 6/8cores +32GB ram as their "mini" server which is shit, because too expensive. Why they not offer small dedicated servers like; 2/4 cpu+8GB ram ? These you would get much cheaper like for $24 monthly and not $124 month.

Do you know some good fast cheaper mini dedicated server like; 2cpu+ 4GB ram for $15-19 monthly?

Looks like your VPS has only an IPv6 address (starts with 2a04, and by default, some networks (like home ISPs) or even PuTTY might not handle IPv6 well.

Here’s what you can try:

1. Check if your internet connection supports IPv6 – go to https://test-ipv6.com and see if IPv6 works on your side.
2. If it does, open PuTTY and paste the full IPv6 address in square brackets, like this:
   
   [2a04:xxxx:xxxx::1234]
3. If your connection doesn’t support IPv6, you won’t be able to connect unless the VPS provider gives you an IPv4 address too.

Until they reply, you’re kinda stuck unless you have IPv6 working. Let us know what the test says and we can help from there.

that’s ipv6 most setups can’t handle it unless u tweak things. either ask them for ipv4 or use a vps that supports ipv6 to bridge. not much u can do till they reply unless u like messing with tunneling.
