Let this be a warning to all those who think there's no harm in shill bidding. This guy in the UK narrowly escaped jail and had only carried out a handful of auctions.

Story here....

I think this is only applicable to cars and very expensive items. How did they know its you if you use proxies and dummy accounts for listing and bidding?

Haha, I did this back in '04 (granted not on Cars and alike). All I got was a 5 day suspension from eBay.

How the times have changed.

BTW. Does anyone remember the '1c eBay Auction Secret'. Man that think made bank!

It comes under the EU Law i forget where i read it.
But he did get very greedy! and didn't cover his back.

Take it as a warning but use your brain to cover yourself in all areas if you was to do it!

This guy wasn't merely unlucky, he was greedy and got in over his head, and drew attention to himself. It was the dollar amount that got him caught, and the fact that he probably didn't take many measures to protect himself as others have noted.

They always pick the low-hanging fruit.

He should have used Proxies. Stupid him.

I hate fake bidders, got me to pay another $50

It's not always that difficult to detect...a combination of commonsense and intuition really.

I was bidding on 2 items from the same seller. None of the other items had any bids but suddenly both mine do!! I refused to bid any higher and hopefully the seller was left with the items!!

Quite often the fake bidders have no or little feedback and the accounts are relatively new. Obviously if you're using friends or family, as opposed to multi accounts then this may not be the case.

I'm positive the same thing happened to me years ago, when I was new to eBay, but too naive to realise what was going on. C'est la vie I guess. We live and learn!!

I hate bid snipers more than fake bidders. Just don't bid more than what you're willing to pay for the item.

i hate them too. but if you dont sniper, you will never win another auction.
if i really want an item, i watch the last second tick away to make sure. EVERY SINGLE AUCTION goes crazy at the last second. its almost so bad, people pull their listings cuz they think their NR will sell to low, not knowing 90% of the bids havent happened yet.

I thought eBay had changed the system now whereby if you bid within the last few seconds the auction time is extended??

Seen this in the news the other day he probably did it to get more money for mcdonalds and kerbabs the fat lazy f***.
