Got this in my mail this morning.

TLDR: The new Coinbase Wallet web app is your home for everything onchain. Connect multiple wallets and see a full picture of your crypto, NFTs, and DeFi positions. Buy, swap, send, stake, and mint easily from any of your wallets. The new Coinbase Wallet web app also works seamlessly with smart wallets, the newest way to get started onchain in just a few clicks.

What Is Changing?

Following a lawsuit filed by a coalition of regulatory authorities against centralized cryptocurrency platforms, new compliance standards have been established. The legal action underscored potential risks to user funds held on centralized exchanges, including vulnerabilities related to mismanagement or security breaches. In response, Coinbase will transition all user accounts to self-custody wallets by April 15, 2025, enhancing the safety and autonomy of your holdings.

Benefits of Self-Custody

A self-custody wallet grants you exclusive control over your private keys, eliminating dependency on third-party custodians. This shift aligns with regulatory expectations while providing you with enhanced security and ownership of your digital assets.

Introducing Coinbase Wallet

We recommend adopting Coinbase Wallet, our secure, non-custodial solution. Supporting over 500 cryptocurrencies, it offers seamless integration with decentralized applications and employs advanced encryption to safeguard your assets. For more details, please refer to our blog post.

Action Required: Please complete this transition by April 15, 2025, to ensure uninterrupted access to your funds.

Steps to Transition Your Account

  1. Download the Coinbase Wallet application from coinbase.com/wallet.
  2. Import the seed phrase provided below to configure your wallet:

Horray! This sounds awesome, Massive crypto hacks won't affect customers as much now and I bet "do kyc to withdraw" will be a thing of the past!

Haha, in your dreams. :D We’re actually heading toward more regulation, not less. Anonymity is being phased out in many spaces, and KYC is likely here to stay, especially as governments clamp down for security and compliance. Crypto hacks might be less impactful, but expect more oversight, not less. :D

I am not 14, and I still hate KYC. :D

Coinbase Wallet is decent, but still wouldn’t trust it over a proper hardware wallet.
