Studying the CORE of web design

I am not a designer at all Nor I intend to become one at the near future.
Just a full time marketer that wants to learn the core aspects of web design.

I do not intend to start photoshoping, but I want to learn the whole theory in order to enhance my marketing consulting ranges. (I partially consult companies about CRM and website optimization).

Can anyone direct me to a good solid book / E-book I can learn from?

I wouldn't go with an e-book. I'd start with

Learn HTML first. Go through their tutorials and learn how html works. You'll get the picture and w3schools is the best around bar none. They have everything clearly explained and live examples.

The next step would be to learn the a little javascript and css to see how they all tie together on web pages.

Using w3schools.com is a great point of reference, like Cashfap stated. It sounds like that is what you are looking for at this stage.

If you are looking for a deeper understanding, as in being able to do the work yourself and/or know what it is you are looking at so that you can monitor your freelancer's progress to make sure you aren't getting screwed/the job is done properly...then you are going to need to take it to another level all together.

Best way is hands on to discover the basics. Reading will only do so much.

You need to get a template from somewhere and a html editor. Look in the coding part of the site and add and take away to see what does what.

You only need to know the basic commands and whats crucial is CSS. Tables are a bxtch. So aim after those first. Loads of people say "tables are obsolete" and they are absolutely not. They are verified with every browser known to man and you can never go wrong with them.

Div layers will look fxcked in some browser if you are using "pixels=px" instead of "points=pt" when coding.

Once you know the basics you can branch off.

But if you don't want to disappoint yourself. Learn photoshop at the same time you're learning html. Use the slicing tool on photoshop and save for web for automatic tables. It's pretty nice. You can also set it to output in Div + CSS.

the best way to start photoshop is by allot of tut on youtube try to do all the tut then u get at less the 1st idea and all the tool box then u can create your own design

BTW - I code html. I am not relating to coding; I meant the theory behind web design..
I read a few books and tutorials, but none fulfilled my needs..

It is better to start with Practical learning as it will give you detailed knowledge whereas a book will only give you limited knowledge.
